UWOL 25 Small Treasures - Oliver Pahlow
Well, this is my entry. I used my trusty (SD) Sony VX2100 camera. For the long shots I used a 2.0 tele converter. Editing was done using SonyVegas 12. The music was done on my Yamaha synth and recorded using Audacity. I wish the shots had more green color in them, but thats how it looks out by me this time of year.

Hi Oliver,
Your scenery looks like over here... everything is brown'ish, waiting for spring and summer to show up. I noticed in the shot of the lake (starting at 1:51), your camera was tilted a little to the right, making the horizon tilt as well. Well done! I enjoyed watching. ps, you should include a link to your film in your feedback thread. |

Thank you Trond. The ground was very uneven and I should have known better than not to adjust for it. I will post a link to the video.

Re: UWOL 25 Small Treasures - Oliver Pahlow
Hello Oliver
you did a good job with you trusty VX2100, it still deliver a nice image. Sometimes people run to fat to catch the lasts camera, instead of staying and keep filming. I didn’t realy get the “Horizon” theme in your film. Can you tell me a bit more how you thought of your film and the theme? |
Re: UWOL 25 Small Treasures - Oliver Pahlow
Hi Oliver.
Thank you for delivering a movie that gave me an idea of how to expand your horizons by visiting local treasures. The deer was a surprise that I liked a lot. So good to see wild animals in the immediate environment. You give us an indication of what is to come, the trees will have green leaves in the summer and the environment will change. Good thinking. Editing, music, and comments are well done. Your movie gave me a relaxing feeling and a sense of being part of your trip. Thanks for sharing. |
Re: UWOL 25 Small Treasures - Oliver Pahlow
Hi Oliver,
Thanks for sharing your movie. The music was really nice and mellow; I see that you made it yourself which is cool. The movie itself is a nice and tidy story, with a clear voiceover and crisp images (glad to see someone is still rocking with the 4:3 ratio!). While your horizon was a bit wonky in one panning shot, this did not detract from the wider horizon you get from exploring nature, wherever you might find it, be it in a National Park or just a flooded quarry. |
Re: UWOL 25 Small Treasures - Oliver Pahlow
Hi Oliver,
I think this is a nicely balanced film - your voice over is clear - images are good - my only comment would be to tighten up some of the edits a bit - sometimes shot lingered a frame or two too long. I enjoyed it! Thanks! |
Re: UWOL 25 Small Treasures - Oliver Pahlow
Hello Oliver. This video was fun to watch. I liked the music. I especially liked the voice-over. Its style reminded me of nature documentaries from the sixties and it made me a bit nostalgic. The story carried us along and built us up to the end but I think you could have safely given us a bit stronger of an ending. Overall very good. Hope to see you again next time. Best wishes.

Re: UWOL 25 Small Treasures - Oliver Pahlow
Oliver....just watched this again and I am still impressed that you edited and scored this film on the last day, last evening really, of the challenge.
Nicely done friend! Just a disclaimer, but Oliver and I have been friends, and have worked for the same employer, for 20+ years. So we did most of our critiquing face to face. In fact, we were both ready to step into the shark tank, but we each pulled the other back at the last minute, and we both got our entries in. So thanks for that, Oliver! |
Re: UWOL 25 Small Treasures - Oliver Pahlow
Thanks everyone for your comments and pointers, I really appreciate it. This was actually plan "B" since I did not like the shots I took for plan "A". The idea I had was the discovery of the small hidden lakes and expand the horizon to the large lake at the top of the hill. I'm not sure if that came across, but there it is. It was a good opportunity to blow the dust off the old camera. Thanks for letting me participate.

Oliver,
your film is a pleasure to watch with good comments. You get an extra plus for good, self composed music. |

Oliver
Your winter landscape looks very similar to ours – dry and dusty and lifeless. The Afrikaans people here have a good word for it - “faal”. Yet in the springtime the landscape is transformed and I have to agree with you, in moments like that you have to cherish life’s little treasures. Some nice shots in ther. I like the tilt down to the foot of the bridge and then up the path to the brow of the hill. Looks like a very nice place to regain your composure - either side of that horizon. |

Finn and Marj,
Thank you very much for your comments and inputs. I very much appreciate. |
Re: UWOL 25 Small Treasures - Oliver Pahlow
Oliver, nice video. You know that last shot was pretty good, with people going different directions and then the person going right by the camera. For some reason it just kind of fit right in.
