Re: UWOL36 Tales of wonders and woes
Now we have weather as a theme and we here are faced with only unpredicted weather conditions, i wanted to shoot the sun and we have had rains here all Grey again. This has not helped me with the shooting.
I did do some shooting but the story has completely gone out of the window due to changes in weather, Showing the full Sun and Rains in same breath is kinda strange isnt it :) However i picked up a sound track and now gonna try and put together and see what it comes out to be. I just hope you all dont throw me into the shark tank for that :) |
Re: UWOL36 Tales of wonders and woes
Hi everyone:
With 4 days to launch time, the forum chat is picking up and the suspense is really starting to build! :) I can't wait to see what you all have put together. Comments from Geir, Trond, Dale, Bob, Matt, Kevin... it's like coming home to family! Also with the added splattering of "new" faces... "new" to me anyway! I find it amusing that the theme, weather, has gotten in the way of our shooting, ha... who would have thought! Cheers, and will the waiting ever end? Bring it on! It's UWOL 36 time! Cat |
Re: UWOL36 Tales of wonders and woes
I have shot some of the worst footage of my life. You wont see most of it. perhaps I need a bloopers reel!
I have my little film all edited. Now I am trying to compose some guitar music for it, was thinking bag pipes might be more apporpriate, just can't play them! |

Re: UWOL36 Tales of wonders and woes
Time for a little more shooting this morning then back on a plane to Iowa at 9:30 tonight. Won't be home until 2AM so probably no shooting tomorrow until later in the day if at all depending on the weather.
It's been an incredible time. I've seen more wildlife in the past week than I've seen in many years combined. Literally thousands of animals everywhere. In past trips I've only seen bighorn sheep way up in the cliffs. this trip I could reach out of my car and touch them if I wanted to. Amazing, amazing footage. Now I have basically a day after I get home to think of a story to tie all of it together and get my submission in. |
Re: UWOL36 Tales of wonders and woes
If you think you will be able to submit an entry, don't wait too long before you request the upload details.
Send an email to uwol@dvinfo.net |
Re: UWOL36 Tales of wonders and woes
Unfortunately I will not be able to complete an entry this round. Have been so busy editing various projects. Surprised by how much footage I recorded this year. Here is a link to some Kingfishers that I filmed in July. The owners of the land have some holidays cottages along the river, so I cut together this short for them last week to go onto their new website as a thank you for letting me film there. Thought you might like to watch whilst you are waiting for your entries to upload, best in 1080hd. Looking forward to watching all of your films

Re: UWOL36 Tales of wonders and woes
Wow Kevin, & i thought i was looking forward to seeing Spectre last night. I think i am looking forward even more to seeing your film now. Sounds like you have some incredible footage!
On that note, what beautiful footage of the kingfishers Mick. It's a pity you won't be able to put something together for this one i always love to watch your films. It's funny, i was off to such a great start with this one, but my project seems to have stalled a little. The last half of this month has been much busier for me, & getting out to get the last of the footage i need for my original plan hasn't happened. I may have to tweak things a little to make it all work. |
Re: UWOL36 Tales of wonders and woes
Bryce,
I've been coming to Montana for three decades and I've never seen this many animals. In Iowa maybe I see a deer on the road once a year or so. Driving 52 miles out of the North entrance back to Livingston I'd say between elk, mule deer, white tail deer, pronghorn antelope and bighorn sheep I'd say we easily saw close to a thousand animals. Cars were literally weaving in and out of them on highway 89. It was insane. My specialty over the years has been North American predators. I have a pretty good idea that some of them will make an appearance in my film. :) I'm am fortunate to have friends that live here all year round and it's nothing to have several dozen wild turkeys rooting on their front porch, or bobcats crossing a semi-frozen creek. Was out filming again this morning for what will probably be my final opportunity. Nature didn't disappoint me! :) |
Re: UWOL36 Tales of wonders and woes
Wow Kevin,
It sounds amazing! This is Iowa right, not Yellowstone?! :) Any ideas as to why there are so many animals? They must have made there way there from somewhere else. Very interested to see what you put together for this one, sounds like you have had a ball filming all this stuff. This is a great community, & the little push out the door to go & film something that this contest creates, can be so rewarding. Glad to hear you it has been so rewarding for you. |
Re: UWOL36 Tales of wonders and woes
Mick nice kingfisher film
Kevin I am excited to see your film , so much of good things in there I finally have no story at all, so tomorrow I will see how I get the timeline to look |
Re: UWOL36 Tales of wonders and woes
Hi Mick:
Beautiful Kingfisher footage! Just to let you know, I'm not the only fan of this footage. As I was watching, my cat, Victor (V for short), sat intently watching and ended up pawing at the screen. You had him mesmerized, and me too. :) Kevin, you really have my intrigue up! I can't imagine wild animals by the thousands everywhere you turn. You must have been awestruck everywhere you looked. That really is rare! Looking forward to seeing some of this. I have a feeling I'm going to be blown away. All the best pulling it together tomorrow! |
Re: UWOL36 Tales of wonders and woes
Bryce,
Actually I'm in Montana. Well, at least until 9:35 tonight. :) I'd never see wildlife like thus in Iowa. Maybe a deer every now and then but wildlife isn't easy to see in Iowa. The huge herds of elk, deer, sheep and antelope were all in the fields as we drove out of Yellowstone, headed North on highway 89 towards Livingston where I have some property. I hope my film lives up to everyone's expectations. It's some incredible footage, I just need to find a thread to tie it all together. |
Re: UWOL36 Tales of wonders and woes
Damn you Kevin!! You sure like to tease people. Sounds like this should be interesting.

Sorry Gordon. :)
Still trying to find an idea to tie all the footage together. Sitting here in the Bozeman airport on my laptop trying to find some ideas so I can edit my film tomorrow. My flight out of Denver is now delayed so I won't get back to Iowa until 4:05am! I'll be one tired editor tomorrow as I try to piece this together. I could do a documentary style which if I can't find any other way to present it I will, but I'd love to try and do something different to go with this footage. If it posts, here's a frame grab of what I'm talking about. In Iowa you see wild turkeys now and then. They are very skittish and difficult to film. Most use blinds and camo. To get this shot I'm sitting in my friends living room having a coffee while the Hallmark Channel is playing shooting through the windows which were specially installed distortion free optical glass since her ex-husband is a Nat Geo photographer. She has three flocks of wild turkeys that roost on her front deck and the most effort I expended to get this shot was carrying my camera from my bedroom downstairs to the upstairs living room. :) The whole trip has been like this! |
Re: UWOL36 Tales of wonders and woes
Oh sorry Kevin, i misread your post. I thought you meant you were filming in Iowa. Having spent 10 days in Yellowstone at the end of September with my parents, i sure am jealous of you right now! :) I can't wait to see your film, but don't worry, i think part of what makes this contest so special is the fact that you got out there & got those amazing shots. If you don't put it all together perfectly this time, you will always have that footage & can edit into something amazing later on.

Mick: That kingfisher is something else. What a beautiful creature and great captured.
I have never seen these birds alive, so nice that you show it to us. By the way, is it fishing for tadpoles? Kevin, your teaser. Now I can not sleep until I have seen your video :) I think this will be an exciting round. It's good to see you all chatting about. Like good old days, right? I myself have been put slightly out of business for some days now, because of the flu. It's that time of year, here up north. Nevertheless, some recording has been. This photo of mine was shown on TV two days ago. I get to record some windy action, the problem in these cases is to prevent the camera from water spray. No harm done though :) I'm not finished editing yet, so it will be a close race to the deadline. Take care everyone. |
Re: UWOL36 Tales of wonders and woes
Finally done, never had such a small film
Weather changed a lot this month however i went into it with one concept so didnt want to stray from it so decided to keep it small rather than not do it at all. Excited to see films from others. |
Re: UWOL36 Tales of wonders and woes
Thanks for sharing the kingfisher, Mick! I enjoyed watching it.
Kevin, you know how to bring up the excitement level! I expect the Yeti master to deliver something really good! ---------- 3 entries uploaded to Vimeo so far. Let there be many more! Bring the weather, ladies and gentlemen! |
Re: UWOL36 Tales of wonders and woes
Kevin it's always a great feeling when things come together like that. Sometimes things just fall into a persons lap and others you work your butt off for. Then there's the times went things are a complete flop. This is what makes this all interesting
Take care. Oh and get editing! Gordon |

Re: UWOL36 Tales of wonders and woes
Hey Geir and Cat,
Hope you are both feeling better soon and that you will find the strength to put something together. |
Re: UWOL36 Tales of wonders and woes
After a delay in my flight from Denver to Iowa I finally hit the bed at 4:30 this morning. My cat Hobbes decided I didn't pay him enough attention when I got home so he proceeded to paw at me before 7:30 this morning.
Ok, well. I'll start dumping footage only to have FCPX crash over and over again after importing footage for about an hour. Decided to create the import library on another drive and so far, no crashes. Hope I can get everything imported with no issues tonight so I can start editing!! |
Re: UWOL36 Tales of wonders and woes
Patience Kevin, patience
|
Re: UWOL36 Tales of wonders and woes
Hi Bryce!
Thanks for the well-wishes -- I'm currently feeling fine and already have my video submitted. I was just well-wishing on Geir who is the one currently "under the weather" (no pun intended!) :) Cheers all... the sky's the limit on this one, I think ;-) Kevin -- your posts remind me of finals week and cramming for exams at university many moons ago (shudder) ... |
Re: UWOL36 Tales of wonders and woes
No entry for me this time, as I missed the sign up, but I look forward to seeing everyone else's. This looks like it's going to be a memorable round. Mick, those Kingfishers will probably triple the innkeeper's occupancy next year! You made them look like tropical exotics.
|
Re: UWOL36 Tales of wonders and woes
Hi Steve:
Many thank you's for participating with us this round even without a video submission this once. Your keen insights a very appreciated. |
Re: UWOL36 Tales of wonders and woes
It's 10:12PM here. Can you believe I'm still working on importing footage?
I really don't understand why I import footage and then the connection to it breaks when I try to import from another file. I did manage to import a decent amount but I've been left with Plan F which is simply a comparison of the results of weather here in Iowa and the weather in Montana. Not what I wanted to do but life happens when you're making plans. The music track I originally wanted to use for my idea doesn't work for this comparison video so I have a new one that i sonly 2:30 long. Not sure if I'll end the film there or try someway to continue it on. Sucks because I've only used a fraction of the footage I intended too. Oh well, it's a film challenge and it certainly has challenged. me. :O) |
Re: UWOL36 Tales of wonders and woes
Mick: nice work on the Kingfisher - I think further north in Aus we have a variety of them, very blue in colour. I definitely need to learn more about bird filming - I want to get more footage of the Wedge-Tailed Eagle one of these days.
Kevin - was that meant to be roosting or rooting on the porch? (Post 51 on page 4 of the thread) Quite different meanings in Aus, the latter would be them procreating - although that might suit some nature documentaries. Hopefully you can sort out the technical issues. Sounds like most people have had some trials this round. I thought I had more time to go and film, don't know where it went this month. Got a few clips earlier on, but have just been out as a last ditched effort with great sunny weather, probably got sunburnt in the process. And I might need fluids too, just skipped a few heartbeats in 20 seconds. I had broader plans early on, and then I had to decide on something simple to make it achievable. It might be more of a stretch for the theme, but it's still mostly related. Have to try and put things together now. There were other locations I really wanted to get footage from today, but time constraints and 'other factors' limited where I could film and how rushed I was. Nice scenery out and about though, even if we got stuck behind a herd of cattle for a while. |
Re: UWOL36 Tales of wonders and woes
Tick, tock, clock is ticking and deadline is coming up.
If you haven't got the upload info for vimeo yet, let me know. Looking forward to see much weather this round! Bring it, and hope you all have had fun! |

Hi Andrew, please you enjoyed the kingfishers. You do have a biggi down there, the kookaburra they are from the same family you also have some other great great birds as well. My son and family live in Adelaide. Went to Kangaroo Island last time we were there, filmed all sorts but, particularly liked the Superb Fairywrens. Small, but beautiful. |
Re: UWOL36 Tales of wonders and woes
Yay, film is almost done.
A few hours more work when I get home and hopefully I'll be uploading before its my bedtime! Trying to find a way to include more of the wildlife from the trip but having a hard time because the first half of the trip was near 60 and no snow and the second half was a lot of snow and -15. There's only one glaring sequence because of it but it's a couple cool shots and a different perspective that I may want to leave them in. It's not in the film but didn't you know that bears really don't hibernate? If they have a good source they'll be active all winter long and even if they don't they still can meander around on warm winter days. Have a great clip but none way to fit it in this version of Plan J for this film :( |
Re: UWOL36 Tales of wonders and woes
Done!
All uploaded and everything. I got it in the can early as the day for filming was the 4th of November. I just finished editing, and although not too happy with it I am safe from shaming. |
Re: UWOL36 Tales of wonders and woes
Yay, rendering now, then hope to get it uploaded shortly after.
Can't wait to see all the films. Sounds like there may be quite a few this round. |
Re: UWOL36 Tales of wonders and woes
Ok, i don't seem to be able to upload my video. Can anyone help me out on how i log into the DVinfo account? I have the info from Trond, but can't find where to log out of my account, & into the DVinfo one.
Thanks, Bryce Edit: Ok, i found where i could log out of my own account & log into the DVInfo one. Uploading now. |

Hi Bryce:
Here's a screen grab of my personal Vimeo page. If you roll your curser over the face icon (just to the left of the "upload" button) at the top right of the screen it will give you a drop down menu. The log out option is the last option on the list. This will log you out and takes you to the log in page. Then you can log into the uwol@dvinfo.net site. Hope this helps... I found the log out difficult to find, too. oh -- you beat me to it. glad you're up and running... |
