Yes Geir Inge natural sound does put a video up on a whole new level. Sound can take a fair amount of time to do right. It's something you have to do all through the whole video to make it sound right. For me with a long lens and the wind blowing I get very little usable audio with my shots so I have to come up with it after the fact. I'd have to get my act together so I'm not down to the last day before I even start to edit. :)

I remember especially Ruth Happel, joined Uwol from the start.
Just sayin, when it comes to sound we could learn a lot from her videos.

Agreed! She was/is a master of the sound. Learned much from her.

Yes, most of the feedback throughout the years since the beginning of UWOL, has focused on content and image quality/framing, and so on.
Very little focus on the sound quality and/or sound equipment.

So to start:
What sound equipment do you guys use for the UWOL challenges?
I have very limited sound gear myself:
Shure SM58 handheld, with a 10 meter cable. Should probably have picked another one, as this one gives a very low volume, which I need to boost in post. But sound quality is good.
Rode Videomic (the first version, which I bought in 2003, I think it was), in addition to the built in mic of the XF300.
The built in mic of the XF300. Surprisingly I find this sometimes to be even better than the two others, especially indoors.

It could also be interesting to hear what settings and codecs you use for the UWOL videos.
Software: Adobe Media Encoder CS6
The originals with AVID DNxHR,
and for UWOL:
H.264 1080p 25fps, 2-pass VBR 14mbps target bitrate, with max render quality.
Audio: AAC, 320kbps bitrate

Trond I use a Zoom H5 to record audio. I use the onboard stereo mics to record ambient audio. I will also use it with a Sennheiser ME66 shotgun mic which I do have a blimp for. I also record my narration with the H5 and ME66.

How do you find the ECT mode? I've never been really happy with it (only tried a couple of time and gave up on it) but I might have to revisit it

I have a GH5 and Oly 75-300 lens. With ETC on I get nice detail.
