this is a good opportunity to remind everyone, the user name and password that i sent everyone are case-sensitive. that's lower-case "i" and upper case "M" --there is nothing wrong with the FTP instructions. i tested them myself.

yes, we're having issues, but the files *are* getting posted and we are doing everything we possibly can to solve the issues we have created, including an entire shift in how we will proceed with UWOL #3. no one who wants to participate will get left behind due to technical difficulties. we're committed to getting every file online.

thanks for your patience.

I uploaded my entry via FTP using this username and password last night. Worked like a charm. Using Windows...FTP to the url from explorer. A window should pop up asking for username and password. Enter those. Then you can simply drag and drop your entry to the explorer window and it should upload. You're done!

Rick

Meryem Ersoz March 18th, 2007 05:03 PM

it should be as easy as rick says...to add to his easy instructions.

if you can't use Explorer as your FTP client....

then google search Cyberduck and download the free and user-friendly client. you don't even have to have the website open to use the Cyberduck client.

do the following:

open Cyberduck
at the "quick connect" window, type in "uwolchallenge.com"
go to the action window, pull down "Upload"
click on your file
a new prompt will appear, asking you for a username -- type in the username we sent you--and at
password --type in the password.

exactly as they appear in the e-mail-- and most of all, remember--

they're case sensitive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you need to have upper case where we wrote upper case, and lower where we wrote lower case....

Downloading page?

I went to uwol.com
Went to downloader
Page not available (tried on both of my computers.

do I need to do something different than last time???

Ruth Happel March 18th, 2007 08:44 PM

I've tried three times to upload. Is it possible the page is only available when someone else isn't uploading a video? I am definitely using the case sensitive username and password you sent, but am still having no luck with the uploading.

Okay, I guess the 4th time is the charm. The upload finally just worked for me. But I did try the same username and password 3 times already earlier today, so you might want to see if only one file can be uploaded at a time. Since it takes a while to upload, people might be bottled up at some point toward the new deadline. Just a thought to check out how it works, since I had so much trouble uploading. I hope someone will let me know if it didn't work. I took a small version of the file- it doesn't look great, but meets the contest rules.

Any help out there??

Dale,
did you get an email from Meryem about FTP'ing right to the site?
If not let me know and I'll get you the info.

I finally decided on a method for encoding from a PC. First let me say that the Sorenson Squeeze demo looked great. But it is watermarked. So, I exported a DV AVI from Premiere Pro, converted it to Quicktime at the same 720X480 frame size, then converted that to 320X240.

I don't know why two conversions worked better than one, but so be it. That's what my eyes told me.

I'm off to ftp the file now...

Marco Wagner March 18th, 2007 11:45 PM

PPro2.0 720x480p 16:9 avi
to
VirtualDub 1.61 64bit Lanczos3 resize filter 428x240 avi
to
QuickTime Pro

49.5MB!!!

(only took me 12 tries)

Meryem Ersoz March 19th, 2007 08:07 AM

well, by hook and by crook, as the expression goes....all of the folks having problems, seem to have gotten their videos uploaded so far....

thanks for hanging in! and congratulations to those of you who are finishing or have finished. we're at least 17 videos richer so far, in spite of the issues. that's amazing. you all are amazing!

Good Morning,

I believe I got mine on the ftp page. Once I got to the page I just cut and pasted it to the page.

As for compression I had some trouble to start with and was unhappy with the results.
I compressed it in sorenson 3, went to options and changed to wide screen and volia all seemed well in the universe.

I just hope I put it in the right place. Is there any way to0 find that out?

Kevin Railsback March 19th, 2007 03:33 PM

Dale,
Check the list of films in this thread: http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?t=88949

As I move them to the proper directory, I add them to the list.
Just an FYI, there's a partial file sitting in the FTP folder so if your film isn;t listed in the above thread let Meryem know and we'll hunt around for it or you may need to re-upload it.

Don't lose the faith in the challenge because of the tech problems we've had.
They'll be hammered out by next challlenge I'm sure or Meryem, will probably delay the next challenge until they are :)

Even though there's still been bumps, I love this challenge and I hope we all continute to contribute, grow and learn from it.

Ungh.

I've been unable to get my file to compress much. Using Premiere Pro - sorensen 3 compression, lowered the bitrate and audio.

Still around 100mb

I've tried following all the tips in this thread, except the ones that require new software (which i can't buy right now).

Can anyone help me? Getting mighty frustrated. I've even removed all motion from the credits and cut 2 seconds off the opening title to try and save space.

If anyone can help in real time, check IRC undernet server, #videography room. I'll be there.

Brian McKay March 21st, 2007 12:14 PM

Double check the final screen size and try reducing the quality. With PP I and sorenson I can easily get down in size ....play with the quality.

I broke my sound down to like 64kbps in order to keep the visual quality.

Figured it out.

In Premiere Pro 2, under File > Export

Adobe media Encoder

This menu item let's you pick different types - such as Quicktime web and Mpeg1

I used Mpeg1 and got 29mb that looked better then the 87mb QT Sorensen 3

Well, hopefully others who are using PPro2 might find this info helpful.

Another thing - i couldn't get IE to work for ftp, it kept reseting my connection at 9mb. but WS_FTP worked great to upload.
