And the Winner of UWOL Challenge #1 is......
Aloha and congratulations to all those who submitted work to the first
Underwater and Over Land video contest. There were a lot of great entries, and it was a pleasure to see all the good stuff created by our community here at DVINFO.NET. One film-maker turned in work that we considered comparable to that seen on National Geopgraphic and Nova. It had everything going for it including beautiful images, (both technically and artistically) a wonderful sound track that featured both recorded nature audio and appropriately chosen music well blended together. But, what was most impressive was that this video was crafted in such a way as to revere Nature's grandeur and infuse the viewer with the author's infectious love of it. The winner of the the first DVINFO.NET UWOL challenge is, "From Sea to Peak2" by Per Johan. First Runner Up: "The Living Skies", by Paul Wags. Second Runner Up: "Wind Country", by Gordon Hoffman Third Runner Up: "Home To Roost" by Mat Thompson A big THANKS for all the other creators who put their best efforts forth. You have the next contest to look forward to winning. Peace and Love, Jacques Mersereau |
per, you rock! and it couldn't happen to a more constructive, friendly, and helpful guy. you have helped so many of us develop both our craft and, just as importantly, also our DVinfo nature and outdoors community.
congratulations on your beautiful work! it's a well-deserved award. |
Well done indeed, Per Johan; it's great for all mankind when natural beauty is revealed and, in this case, cherished by critical acclaim. You're a star and don't you go far away from us now; you'll be needed around UWOL for generations to come.
And well done to Paul and Gordon and Mat, too. Snapping at Per's heels you all were and that's the way to keep raising the bar for the rest of us. |
"I told you so" :)
All the best and congratulation with the first prize. I think we have a lot to learn from you Per Johan and you deserve the prize. I'm proud to be your friend! |
Congratulations Per Johan!

Congrats, and the judging was definitely on the money !! |
Per, that was absolutely gorgeous! How did you get that shot alongside the gull's? It was like you were flying right with them!
:) Well done! |
Well done Per.....Congrats!!!!!
Randy |
I was so captivated by your work I had to watch it over and over and just couldn't get enough of it. It was visual poetry and well deserving of first place.
Congratulations!!! Bruce Foreman |
Excellent!
Congratulations Per,
You absolutely deserve the respect and admiration of all the other UWOL challengers. I love your entry and will be keeping it to watch and show to others. Great job! Rick |

Hey well done Per.
Looks like I got runner up...WOW did not expect that! Took abit of time to get the shots but edited it up with EDIUS in about 1 hour . Encoding it out from the 1440/1080 timeline was very easy as well with Procoder Express. One thing I learned is to turn your steady shot off when on a tripod for timelapes stuff. Congrats to everyone else that sent work in. Thanks again. Paul Wags |
Wow! Congrats Per! thats is awesome! I loved your video. And not just that video, but all of your videos! Thanks alot Per! You are truly talented, and a great inspiration!
Congrats to everyone who made a film! Raise and toast to this great event! Cheers! ~Gabriel |
Per,
The prize couldn't have gone to a nicer guy or a better videographer. Congratulations. |
Per, Paul, Gordon, Matt - congratulations to you all. Well deserved.
|
...hope that's just ginger ale in your glass, gabriel....heh.

Yes, congrats Per, Paul, Gordon, & Matt, wonderful videos. ~Gabriel |
Thanks all!
I must say that I haven't any words! I really haven't expected the first price!
I have got a real flu, so maybe that was the price I had to pay ;-) I'm just up writing this and back to bed. Stay warm! Best: |
Well done Per
Per I have to agree with everybody that you had a beautiful piece of work there. Take care.
Gordon Hoffman PS Thanks everyone for the second runner up place. I think my hat will fit a little tighter for the next while which maybe a good thing in this country. |

One thing I noticed was that the sun goes the wrong way in your place compared to mine! Prove that the Mother Earth is round and not flat huuu! Best; |

When you render this you got the desired effect, where the sea is almost calm but the clouds are speeding through the sky! Hopefully you understand what I tried to explain? |
congrats
Per,
I am so pleased you got the nod from the judeges. My top four were yours, marlo, railback and wags. I thought they all had something special!! Thanks for the trick on the ocean sky applications. Will try that at some point in time. congratulations again. |
Thanks for puttin me in your top 4 Dale. I know I sucked the big egg before I even uploaded it so I didn't even bother to make a feedback thread.
Per, I really like your idea about combining two clips to make the sea calm and the sky go sailing by. I'll have to give that a shot sometime. I usually record the timelapse right to my camera so I normally don't have a normal speed clip. I'll have to try it sometime though if I know I want that effect. Congrats again. Beautiful film! |
I must say I have learned a lot, not only about stretching my imagination, put reading and practicing the technic used by all of you. Thank you. Bob

I sometimes forget things, but I don't feel like an old person ;)
In my eagerness to give my regards to my friend Per Johan for winning this first UWOL-challenge, I completely forgot about you, the other participants, forgive me for being such a norwegian patriot :)
I must say I have learned a lot from this UWOL-contest - and: from your videos, from your feedback, from your tips, and: though all of this has taken place in "cyberspace", I can't stop feeling that I've get to know you, and like to call you my friends :) this forum's got a very civilian attitude, somthing I appreciate very much, I think if you love nature you will become a better person ;) so know I'm looking forward to the second challenge - wondering what Meryem and the "crew" might put up as theme, just can't wait :) to Per Johan, I wish you well and hope to see you soon, we have to take a trip to Runde and "shoot" some birds, this time of year the seabirds comming in from the sea, and at Runde there are thousands of them. |
Ps
About next theme: I begged Meryem not to put up an under water challenge, it's too cold in the sea this time of year, but maybe it's just what she intend to to :)
Well, maybe we should go for a wetsuit :) brrrrr.... |
just to keep the record straight, my boys do not have anything to do with the themes. this permits them to participate on the completely level playing field with everyone else. i'm the only one with the power to torment you all, bahahahaha! get ready! i got plans!
|
No doubt about it, next time we can expect everything :)
that laughter - "bahahahaha" - sunds just like Dr. Evil from Austin Powers ;) I'm on my way to the store, bying a wetsuit :) just have to find my wifes purse... |
dr. evil? i sound like dylan! except i think he spells it muahahaha. entirely different....

Around here we'll have to cut holes in the ice to get to the water, but that should change in another month or so. |

Congratulations to Per and to the runners-up. Per, you are an inspiration to us all.
|
I know it's already been said a lot, but I have to do it to... Excellent work there, Per - Congratulations!
