WELL !! I made the biggest balls up yesterday! I full days shoot, a perfect weather window with low winds and my new F4 300mm !! and a low tide window, crucial for this subject. I hiked over 5 miles with 15kg+ on my back and thought YES this is going to be perfect.

....then realised I'd forgotton my EF adapter....DOH....needless to say some expleatives were used !

It's been many years since I saw some trolls Per Johan, this I can't wait to see :) Does it look like this one in Lillehammer?

Kevin Railsback May 18th, 2007 04:57 AM

Mat, I feel for ya buddy! I was halfway to my destination when I realized I left all my P2 cards sitting on my desk. So, I had to go all the way back which cut down on my shooting time.

I now have a shot of a mushroom, a duck and a flower! Whoo Hoo!

Looks like I'll be getting up early tomorrow to see if I can get anything else or if it's in the tank for me. :(

Mat Thompson May 18th, 2007 05:07 AM

Ahhhh the lesser spotted norwegian salmon troll .....got ya ;)

Packing list....well not as such but I do usually count everything in and out of my pack/bag. Unfortunatley the new lens meant I left the ef adapter with the old lens.......I really was SO annoyed, the wind was vitually non-existant and there was plenty of light a situation that hasn't occured much here in the past few weeks.

The problem was I had a tidal window of only 2-3hrs and its a hard trek....I consider myself fairly 'hardcore ;) !' but adding another 10miles onto the day with that pack was just not happening. I'm thinking of using my mountain bike next time :)

Kevin .... mushrooms, ducks , flowers....sounds like a classic story to me ;)

Gabriel Yeager May 18th, 2007 07:50 AM

My Tale...

Well, I just got back this morning from day two of shooting. My Crane and I are starting to become good friends now. :-D

What a beautiful bird. It flys so nice...

Anyways, I went back this morning to the same lake I went to Wednesday. I am really starting to like that place!

Got my sunrise that I talked about in another thread. It turned out perfect. I was running out of tape at the end too! lol. I was watching it count down, then once it said I only had 2 minutes left, thats when I stopped it. :D Talk about perfect timing!

This time I left the tape rolling the hole time to make sure I got everything. Only stopped it to fix the shutter speed. Other then that I was just burning up tape!

It was a beautiful morning, it would have been spectacular if there were just a little bit more clouds!

I think I might be turning into a morning person -- for better or worse!

So I got there way earlier, but I think it was perfect 'cause it gave me plenty of time for setup.

And I think I am onto phase two of the challenge now. Uploading and editing. ;)

Oh! Thanks for saying that! lol! I forgot all about that part of my film... Dang-it, I need to find more tape!!

I think I will make it (If the lack of sleep does not get to me first)!!

Best wishes everyone!

Meryem Ersoz May 18th, 2007 09:15 AM

well, you have 30-something players here who feel your pain, mat! it's impossible to shoot video and not pull the bonehead play now and then. it's those little things that'll kill ya. how many times have i forgotten to check for the tripod plate in my lifetime?? nothing like carrying a 10 lb. doorstop on a miles-long hike....might as well stick a pile of rocks in my pack and call it "training...."

of course, for per and his jib and his big miller tripod, this is just a stroll in the sun!

i just love the back stories, y'all! you won't find these anywhere else on the web!

Dale Guthormsen May 18th, 2007 09:16 AM

Mat,

I sympathesize!!! you know, its a rule!!! When everything is gonna be right something happens!!!

whats the old saying, "making a list and checking it twice!"

A mountain bike sounds more reasonable to me!!!

A good horse can do wonders!!!

I can see it now in his entry:

Kevin in front of open oven...Mushroom sliced & diced...Ducks plucked...

...Staring at flower and muttering, "Whut the heck amigonna do with this?"

Mat Thompson May 18th, 2007 01:14 PM

LOL.....funny stuff !!

Dale Guthormsen May 18th, 2007 10:48 PM

The tripod

Good evening,

I got the tripod today. It is definitely a miller. the sticks are in fact a wooden tripod, and I must confess the are one of the nicer set of wood legs I have seen.
the fluid head is totally consistant in it pan weight and its vertical movement. It is very smooth and does not retract at all when you stop your movement.
It is definitely old but substantially better than any tripod I have had my cameras on. I reckon it was worth a hundred fifty dollars.

It says Miller copyrighted F

Per Johan Naesje May 18th, 2007 11:12 PM

Congrats Dale,
I think you done a real good deal, $150 that's nice :-) Looking forward to see steady pans with your 100-400mm.

Dale Guthormsen May 18th, 2007 11:14 PM

Per,

I posted a few flicks on the tripod threads to see if anyone knows what it actually is. Definitely not a new version.

Per Johan Naesje May 18th, 2007 11:33 PM

Have been looking at the pics, yes it's definitely an old model. But as long as you'll have steady shoots, no one asking which tripod used (except wildlifephotographers of course!) ;-)

Meryem Ersoz May 19th, 2007 11:16 AM

my tale of wonder is that i'm actually babysitting an uploading file, entitled MCE_UC3_TheGreenTara. i finally managed to put up an entry to uwolchallenge.com. yes! woo hoo! i'm so excited to finally have this system down to where i can participate (outside of the competition, of course, but in the game!)

it's kind of goofy, but i'm going through all of the participant pathways, (so when i'm done i have to go in the regular way and move my own file around....) just to see what you all go through.

and i have to say, it's pretty exciting, to get to the upload stage of things and to know that my modest little entry is going on to the site with everyone else's....

Geir Inge May 19th, 2007 11:40 AM

Congratulation on your entry Meryem.
There are some very exciting titles uploaded, cant wait to see them all :)

Gabriel Yeager May 19th, 2007 12:12 PM

Congrats Meryem on the video!

I just finished editing my entry. Now I have to make the music, export, and upload, then I am good.

I have to admit, this is probably my worst film yet.
Sorry everyone if you watch my video, you might want to cry. lol!

Running out of time, locations, and most of all, energy...

For those of you who saw my first film, "Duck, the Snow Falleth," prepare to see part two! lol... :(

Hopefully with a decent soundtrack, I'll be able to make it less boring for y'all -- Sorry.

Heres a few things that I learned during this time; I dislike editing -- I hate Imovie more, Auto-focus can ruin your best footage, waking up really early and getting minimal sleep four days in a row starts to really get to ya in the 5th day, and caffeine is a life saver. :)

I can't wait to see everyones submissions!
~Gabriel

Meryem Ersoz May 19th, 2007 12:20 PM

gabriel, here's a tip:

mine is clocking in at around 2:15. if you think you're lacking material, better to make it shorter and more interesting than to stretch it to a lower quality 3 minutes. remember, these are maximums. there is no minimum....

Gabriel Yeager May 19th, 2007 12:23 PM

Thanks Meryem..

I like a few of the clips in there, but maybe I will cut it.

It would not have turned out so bad if I could have got the time-lapse to work.. Dumb Imovie..

Thanks for the tip, you have a good point!
~Gabriel

Kevin Railsback May 19th, 2007 05:23 PM

Well, I have diddle squat to go with my mushroom, duck and flower.

I spent about $70 in gas today driving to numerous state and county parks with nothing that even looked remotely interesting.

Found an out of the way state park called Hanging Rock. You'd think that would be interesting right? Nope. Walked down the trail for about two miles then came to a gate that send end of state land.

So, I walked the two miles back without even taking my camera out.

Saw all kind of prairie trilliums and other wildflowers that had all died off now that the trees have leafed out. No wildlife other than a bazillion blood sucking vampire skeeters! 100% Deet and a different repellant on top of that did nothing to deter them. I look like I have chicken pox I have so many bites on me.

Well, tomorrow is do or die. I'll be up and out by 4AM going back to the nature center where I shot the mushroom, duck and flower to see if I can at least add another couple shots. Then I need to head to one more location for the beginning of the film.

Hopefully it will all pan out.

Download ??s

Trying to down load.

I tried to copy and paste, get to the page and it wont highlight the paste button!!

Did a simple drag to the page, the page goes blank, bottom of page has a done in the lower left corner but I do not know how it could be!!

The page I got to has three lines of letters with page lines between them, that is the right page to drag to isn't it???

Dale Guthormsen May 19th, 2007 07:24 PM

Deed is done!!

went to my other computer on the other network and it worked perfect!!!

says and hour a a bit to finish.

Thanks all!!!

Meryem, sorry for bothering you!!!

hope it all works out nicely on yours, looking forward to seeing it!!!

Gabriel Yeager May 19th, 2007 08:09 PM

Hey Kevin, I feel your pain!

Those nasty bugs love to eat me!

Do you drive a truck? Thats abit of money to go through and not find anything... These gas prices are really annoying!

We spent probably $15 or so on our trips for this challenge (we took two to the same place). It was only 7 miles from my house!!!

Were you at-least able find a cash well you were out driving?

I hope you get something Kevin, I love your films!

Best wishes everyone!
~Gabriel

Mat Thompson May 19th, 2007 08:16 PM

Believe me guys if you lived in the uk you'd know the cost of petrol!!! On this challenge alone I'm now at over £120 ! thats $240 US !

Anyway....time for bed !

Kevin Railsback May 19th, 2007 09:27 PM

Yeah we're at $3.29 right now for Unleaded Plus.

Hitting the road early to see if I can scrounge up something.

Then I have to get all my gear cleaned and packed as I'm headed out to Yellowstone for several weeks. Man, the wild stuff I could have shot there! :)

Dale Guthormsen May 19th, 2007 10:53 PM

guys,

yes the gas is getting out of hand.

Filled up today, 1.26 per litre!! That is 4.75 per gallon!!!!

My dodge 4x4 half ton does not get driven much these days. The volkswagen disel was a good investment!!! my tacoma 4x4 is better but not a whole lot.

I quit keeping track of gas expenses, just to depressing!!!

I drove two hours just to film some horned owls, that was about 40.00 for 8 seconds of video. I do not want to count anymore!! I hate money!!!

Gabriel Yeager May 19th, 2007 11:50 PM

Wow you guys spend alot of money on this challenge.. I guess I was raised on the cheaper side though.

Its $3.39 a gallon for the cheap stuff here. Not fun. My Ford Bronco gets about 9 miles to the gallon!

I agree, money is depressing!!

Good-luck on your trip to Yellowstone, and have fun!

Well, I just have to contribute to the petrol matter :)
Norway is an oil producing nation, still we have to pay about 1.98 pr. litre for unleaded gas. But I don't mind really, it's time to think environment.
But I remember in the year of 1973, when the world had an "oil crisis".
In the weekends only public transport were aloud in Norway.
Even our late King Olav did use the public transport, like on this picture, on his way cross country skiing :) He is the one to the right, paying his ticket on the streetcar.

Jeff Hendricks May 20th, 2007 06:21 AM

So Meryem,

Are we talking mignight of the 21st?...just need to know how much time I have left.

Jeff

Mat Thompson May 20th, 2007 06:53 AM

I don't know about tales of woe but this film has now left me unable to walk !!

After forgeting the ef adapter the other day yesterday I went back out again to get the shots I'd missed. My feet were still sore from the previous days hike (10 miles of rocks and sand).

After completing it yesterday I now have the worst blister I've ever had.....it is SO painfull ! Hey ho what you do for your art huh :) Luckilly editing doesnt require quite so much effort....just a hobble to the kitchen for a cup of tea :)

Kevin Railsback May 20th, 2007 11:40 AM

Well, I'm back. Filled up several P2 cards so we'll see if I have enoough to put something together or not.

I'm going to try and do some editing and see where I'm at. May head out towards evening to fill in any gaps if I have to.

The sad thing is that in a few weeks things around here will change and there will be all kinds of things to film.

We're right at the crossroads where everything looks like weeds and it's thick as a jungle and the bugs are beyond horrible.

I swear I lost another quart of blood this morning!!

Chris Barcellos May 20th, 2007 11:49 AM

"and it's thick as a jungle and the bugs are beyond horrible."

Sounds like the wild to me.....

Kevin Railsback May 20th, 2007 11:53 AM

Yeah, but if you try and film it, all you get is a green glob with no definition.

Now, that is pretty much "the wild"!
Why didn't I come up with that idea, haha.

I finally finished and uploaded my video.
Absolutely not the best I have made, but at least it is something.
Managed to get something useful on the 3rd attempt.

I'm looking forward to see all the entries.
