Delay video playback on TV while still recording
 

I have an Canon XA20 and record equine events. I need to establish a system that we can replay the footage captured on the camera with up to a five minute delay on a TV while continuing to record on the camera.

The clips recorded can be up to 6 minutes stopping and starting again a few seconds later. We will also shut the camera off in order to change cards. This camera needs to be turned off to change the cards.

Any help would be appreciated.

Is your goal to do instant replays, or just to constantly have something on your monitors so they don't go black?

If you want instant replays, then you're looking at a lot of money in equipment. At the very least you will need two decks, one to record and one to play back, plus an operator. At the most, you will need an EVS replay machine.

If you just want some content on your screens, a small video switcher and a playback deck with some pre-loaded content would probably work.

You might look at the new Newtek TriCaster Mini HD-4 just released yesterday. You may find it useful in a variety of ways for your live productions. Has 4 HDMI inputs, 2 HDMI outs, and additional ports for monitors/projector feeds of different sources. Live switching plus titles, graphics, live streaming, 4 channel recording, video playback, and more.

But to the point, Newtek has recently upgraded their recording capabilities such that while recording a program, you can create sub-clips with one key press, and those clips immediately populate to the playback bin for instant replay in full HD quality. Notable is that the sub-clip continues to grow, as it is just a pointer to the actual full-length recording on the drive that is continuing to record the live event. You can also change the in point of the clip to an earlier time, or the out point to a later time as the clip "grows". So in effect, you can have a playback delay with this system.

You could buy a Grass Valley Turbo, they are now cheap to buy 1 record, 2 replays. You could record the event and clip up in the 1 player and then add the clips to the playlist on second player. Easily done.
