Image black and white via VGA?

Hi,

I have a 7 inch monitor that I connect to my A1 via VGA. The image looks really good for monitoring/framing/focusing (like an SD TV) but it's in black and white. Is this normal or am I doing something wrong?

When IBM originally developed VGA, there was a very unusual characteristic, designed in, on purpose.

There used to be monochome (Black & white) VGA monitors. So when the computer powers up, it checks for a monochrome monitor and sets black and white mode.

So, today, with some computer systems, if you power up your computer with a VGA adapter and no monitor is connected or on, and then connect or power on the monitor, it may be in black and white mode. For this reason, some computer manufactures want you to power on your monitor first.

Other manufacturers have solved this problem and always coming up in color mode.

My advice is to power on your monitor, have it connected to your equipment, then power on your equipment.

Please let me know if this helped or not.

If not, please let me know how you are connecting a Canon A1 to a VGA monitor. What connections, and/or other equipment are you using?
