LCD HDTV or CRT HDTV?
 

Hello,
I've browsed this subforum, but somehow maybe have missed the answer to this particular question.

I need a monitor to use at home while editing HDV, and I plan to buy a simple HDTV set.
Would you suggest a CRT or an LCD one? Which one is better to adjust colour balance, etc?

I know that CRT's in general are better at displaying warm tones and half tones, but my knowledge may be outdated, because I have no prior experience with high definition.

Do you think this hdtv would be sufficient as a monitor for home studio use? Including setting the colours. :/

Look for a LCD TV with full HD resolution: 1920x1080

The cheapest hdtv with such a resolution costs around 2000$ around here, I can't afford that. :(
I have about 800$ for that purpose, 1000 tops.

I bought a simple Magnavox 32 inch LCD with 1280 x 720 Definition for about $650.00 from my local Best Buy. The video played back from camera is terrific.

It has HDMI input, too, which I can in put from my card that has DVI, using a convertor.

I do believe my graphics card is showing some latency issues getting the image up when I play a high definition file from my hard drive. I notice some weird things in the images in motion situation, that aren't there when I view the same image from the camera.

As far as preview windows in Vegas or Premiere, they do fine, because the previews are generally a lower definition.

Do you think they have Best Buys in Latvia?

A CRT will be just fine. It's actually more accurate in color reproduction. If you can find a HD CRT in your budget range, go for it. And remember, since your probably siting a few feet away from your editing system, you don't need a huge screen.

The only CRT hdtv's I can find in Latvia are not widescreen, but 4:3,
but I intend to shoot in 16:9, so I guess I should look into widescreen LCD models.

The NLE program should output the 16:9 image, and the CRT needs to be able to 'see' it. In other words, if the HD CRT will show 'letterboxed' movies, it will show your NLE 16:9 image.

Obviously, check before you buy.
