Post Your Favorite Soundtracks

I don't know about the rest of you, but I spend A LOT of time looking for amazing new soundtracks. So I started thinking it would be great if we had a thread where we could constantly add those amazing soundtracks as we find them. Who knows, if there's enough interest maybe we can get it stickied.

We should have a system, though, to make things easier. So I suggest you list the movie, followed by the composer. If there are only one or two tracks on the album you like, then add those also.

I'll start things off with a few of my current favorites ...

A River Runs Through It - Mark Isham

Road To Perdition - Thomas Newman (The Farm, Rain Hammers, Road to Perdition & Dirty Money)

Band of Brothers - Michael Kamen (Main Titles, Requim, Winters on Subway, Austria, Headscarf)

The Holiday - Hans Zimmer

Becoming Jane - Adrian Johnston

Under The Tuscan Sun - Christophe Beck

80 views and NO ONE has a soundtrack to add? Really??

Well, I was actually looking for soundtracks, not individual songs, but that's cool. At least someone posted, lol!

One of my favourite scores for a film was James Horner's work for Aliens

I used to listen to it on my tape player, in the dark. It caught the feeling of the film, the fear and the tension perfectly. A perfect example of music adding to the quality of the film

I do love the work of John Williams, specially on my favourite film Raiders.

Other scores I have liked:

Batman - Danny Elfman
Gladiator - Hanz Zimmer
Star Wars - John Williams
Band of Brothers - Michael Kamen

When it comes to films, I think that whether you have a score or a soundtrack depends entirely on the type of film it is, and also what you are trying to say with the film.

If we are talking strictly about scores and not necessarily for wedding work, here's a short list that I like, in rough alphabetical order:

Casino Royale
Chronicles of Narnia (1 & 2)
Courage Under Fire
The Crow
ET
Glory
Harry Potter & The Order of the Phoenix
The Incredibles
Independence Day
Indiana Jones (All 4 of them but especially ROTLA)
The Last Starfighter (cheesy but fun)
Lord of the Rings (all three)
Moulin Rouge
Ratatouille
Star Wars (all 6)
Stargate
Swing Kids
Saving Private Ryan
The Bourne Identity (and sequels)

And just about anything by Michael Giacchino, including his video game music. Some of his work for the World War II genre, from Secret Weapons Over Normandy in the old days to Medal of Honor: Airborne most recently he has an incredibly talent for musically portraying the emotion of a given scene. This isn't a conclusive list of the scores I have enjoyed, but just what's on my iPod right now. :)

I like Thomas Newman a lot - Finding Nemo and Little Women in particular.

I'm sorry. I should have specified soundtracks that relate to weddings. Thanks guys.

Funny you should mention Castaway. I was trying to find that on iTunes but they don't have it. d:-(

They have some great sounds. Much better than a lot of the "stock" music out there. The thing about an actual soundtrack though is that you have a running theme through anywhere from 10-20 different tracks. It's much more cohesive than picking a bunch of random tracks from a place like smartsound.com.

Vince Baker June 2nd, 2008 12:25 PM

Some erm alternatives....

How about trying to fit the following in:

Bring your daughter to the slaughter

Wow, you have to be fairly knowledgeable about the BB to know that particular song. Any idea where you're going to use that in the edit?

Bill Grant June 3rd, 2008 11:15 PM

Not yet, I had considered transition between ceremony & reception. Headed to the party that type of thing, or guy prep. I haven't decided. I'm psyched at the prospect though. I have another one that is next where they are big metal fans and love my suggestion of the String Quartet tributes. I think I'm going to use Korn Falling Away From Me or Freak on a leash from the string quartet. Should be pretty rad.

Well, just make sure you post the results on here for us to see. I'm looking forward to it. d;-)

Bill Grant June 4th, 2008 08:17 AM

Ok well, this is the track that made them want this type of thing. They actually decided from this piece that they would use it in the wedding. That was pretty cool.

Was that song "Toxicity" by System of a Down (done by string quartet of course)?

Bill Grant June 4th, 2008 08:53 PM

You got it... There's a whole series of them from Korn to Foo Fighters

Oh, I know. I've listened to like everything the Vitamin String Quartet does. Was that the artist you used?

Blake Cavett June 11th, 2008 09:27 PM

I keep a list of songs and scores I plan on using. Here's my list so far:

'The Book of Love' - Peter Gabriel
'End Credits' - Cast Away
'Con Te Partiro' - Andrea Bocelli
'Meet Joe Black' - Meet Joe Black
'Death & Taxes' - Meet Joe Black
'Freedom/The Execution - Braveheart
'End Title' - The Shawshank Redemption
'Suds On The Roof' - The Shawshank Redemption
'Hymn To The Fallen' - Saving Private Ryan
'Omaha Beach' - Saving Private Ryan
'The Green Mile' - The Green Mile
'We Meet Again' - Jerry Maguire
'Life Goes On' - A League Of Their Own
'Cinderella Man' - Cinderella Man
'Power Of The Wind' - White Squall
'Departures' - White Squall
'Susan Speaks' - The Patriot
'Love Theme' - Forever Young
'Let Go' - Forever Young

They aren't all homeruns but stuff I think I may think about using sometime!

Travis Cossel June 11th, 2008 11:52 PM

Great list! I'll have to check some of those out.

Blake Cavett June 12th, 2008 07:21 AM

Check back in a week or so... I'll grab my list off of iTunes and post it. Or mail you my CD!

Although I really appreciate the offer for the CD, I'd prefer you just post the songs. Thanks, though!

Blake Cavett June 12th, 2008 11:00 AM

Sorry... I didn't have my sarcasm font on! ;)
I'll consult the list in the coming days!

I have used all of those too (except Braveheart). But recently I have been choosing very different music. Perhaps it goes with a change in my editing style, but those soundtracks just don't seem to work like they used to.

Brandon Freeman June 12th, 2008 02:26 PM

I write my own soundtracks for my vids. :)

My goal in choosing a soundtrack is to find one that I can use a large percentage of the tracks from. That way the final edit has a cohesive feel to it. That's why it's so hard to find soundtracks for me, because I might love one track off of Gladiator, but none of the rest really work for a wedding, so I don't use it.

Brandon, I listened to some of your stuff and you're doing pretty good ... obviously not really wedding-oriented, but good for what you do.

Brandon Freeman June 12th, 2008 03:57 PM

Well, I don't really put wedding oriented stuff up 'cuz I haven't done weddings in a while, but I will be doing weddings again here soon with my biz partner, and part of the package will be an original soundtrack. I think that's pretty unique.

Travis Cossel June 12th, 2008 04:04 PM

Cool idea.
