The completed DVD has been handed over to the client...

You think you've done a great job jumping over the obstacles but....the client says "Do you have more clips of my friend (named such and such")? Can they be added?

What do you say to your client?

You tell them no problem; you charge $200 per hour plus a change fee of $1000, and it will take a minimum of 14 hours to re-edit, re-encode and burn... just like my contractor does when I decide I want an extra shower-head after he's already patched up the drywall.

Depends on the client and how they have been to work with. If they're demanding and unappreciative, I'd quote the rate for changes. If they've been great, I'd do it free.

I only had that request once, and they were the second type. I didn't mind doing a little extra for them.

my time is worth money and since I doubt that I know who their friend is, my answer would be a NICE "no I can't unless you wish to pay my reedit fee which is clearly spelled out in the terms and conditions of my service agreement".
Having said that, I do short form editing BUT they also get the "RAW" footage on DVD with no real editing other than floor, ceiling and belly button shots, so if they really want to see so and so thenthey need to watch the un-time compresed RAW footage.
If they want it in the edited version they pay. PERIOD!

I agree with Don. No one should do it for free unless you need the brownie points. We've had a couple brides want some people taken out and some put in. I explain to them that Its not as easy as it sounds and takes a lot of time. I charge them for what I think is a reasonable amount to do the revisions, reexport, reencode, reburn, reprint... I'll also explain to them that I don't know who means what to you so I cant really know who to put into the final production (unless its obvious) but the quests are just stangers to me.
Maybe a good idea to keep in mind for future weddings is to talk to the BG during the reception to get a good idea of who is more important, usually the important people sit in the front!

We also offer raw footage exported onto DVDs for anyone who wants all the messy footage.
