Glen, what iRiver recording devices do you use and how is the quality of that audio compared to what you get normally? Having audio redundancy would be very comforting.

I use two 790 series iRivers. One is 128megs the other is 512.

AT $150 MSRP, the iRivers device appears to be a cost-effective device for recording audio off camera. May I ask a few questions about this unit?

How does the audio quality from the iRivers unit compare to that of the PD-170?
What type of input does the iRivers device have for mic input?
Is the mic input mono or stereo?
Have you had any problems with sync or drift?
Do you use it strictly as backup audio, or sometimes for primary audio?

I did look at the iRivers web site, but I couldn't find the answers to these questions.

Yes, over long periods of time you'll notice a small amount of drift. Just nip and tuck

Do you use it strictly as backup audio, or sometimes for primary audio?
iRiver on the minister/priest is always primary. Other audio recording devices (Onboard shotgun, etc) act as secondary. Wireless system is primary for the groom/bride vows.

A few follow-up questions if I may:

1. Your answer to the comparison with the PD-170 stated "On board stock shotgun". Does this mean the PD-170 built-in mic, or the Senn ME66?

2. IAC, I guess what I really would like to know is the audio quality using the same mic, but recorded to the PD-170 as compared to the iRiver device. Have you ran any tests like this by any chance?

3. You said the mic input was 1/16". Did you mean 1/8"? I thought all the minijacks were 1/8" (or 3.5mm).
