Generic or personalised designs?
 

Hi All - I spend a not insignificant amount of time on personalised DVD menus/printed case inserts/disc face prints and I'm wondering about the pros and cons of designing some nice generic artwork so that I can speed up my workflow - I could even get the case inserts and disc face prints bulk printed. Something that refers to 'The Wedding Day' rather than using names/dates etc.

It would certainly be a time saver but am I being cheap?

It's something I've also considered in order to reduce the time spent on any given package. It's all about £/hour at the end of the day.

So, yes, I'd be interested in what people have done in this situation too.... though I'd absolutely want to avoid the cheesy templates I've seen for sale on the web so far.

I have my own basic template for label and sleeve artwork, into which I put names dates and personal pictures for each wedding. Doing away with that might save a few minutes, but is losing a personal touch that I find couples really like. It simply turns a very personal thing like a wedding sleeve into something sterile and corporate.

I use MediaChance's Real Draw and also have a basic template that was used at the last wedding so yep, apart from text and images mine I guess are generic. To make a new sleeve I just delete the old bride's pics from the week before, drop in the current pics and change the name and date and it's ready for action! I must admit brides are usually overjoyed with the sleeves and disks when they first see them so I have stuck with the work flow. Disk prints are the same, call up the last bride, change the pic and change the name and date and then print!

We use standard disks and cases for everyone and customise a template for the DVD menu.
Here is our current disk and packaging and in a couple of months our new custom boxes arrive to hold the wallets and USB sticks.

I like doing everything custom.

I thought about a generic template, but I really enjoy the creative process. Even though I'm not that good at it. Lol

We went down the generic route as it saved time and meant we can do our boxes. They simply wouldn't be possible if we did custom.

The cost of a custom printed 10p DVD case was £3.50 in ink and paper (using official person ink). The custom wallets looked nicer and are just £2.50 each. Plus zero time doing the design for each wedding.

The new boxes work out around £14 each but need to be bought in bulk.
