Never film dancing without one

1 Attachment(s)
A GoPro on a monopod that is - I attach the GoPro 3 Black Edition along with a cheap 7DayShop LED light on top of a formally redundant Libec monopod, and link the GoPro to a SmallHD monitor with a handle attached to the tripod mount, at the start of every evening reception just in case.

Sometimes it never gets used but occasionally is a lifesaver such as this shot from yesterday

Great idea but a monopod is a bit heavy & not necessarily long enough so why not use one of these lightweight extending handle with a suitable bracket?

I use one of these Nigel - it's very light and extends long enough for what I need - I get right on the dance floor anyway so the length of this particular monopod is fine. Stability is not really an issue given the GoPro FOV but If I extend it fully I can rest the foot on my hip for extra stability.

I use my jib in those situations; sure I smack several people over the head with it, but true art is said to require some suffering. It doesn't necessarily have to be the artists. ;)

You would have been lucky to get a jib in there Steve - the room was packed!

Sorry I forgot the link. I got the extending handle as part of a kit with an Ezybox soft box. It's very lightweight & great for a GoPro. I gave also used it with an LED video light fixed to the end.

My comment was more a joke really - little dip into fantasy where I could get away with using such a thing during the evening dances. Mostly its a GH2 on a high light stand looking down plus my monopod held up high with a GH4 on 12mm lens and light. Works in nearly all cases.

Hmm interesting Pete

I use an SJ4000 on an 8' stand at ceremonies ..plenty of room for an LED light on top so I should try that during the dancing. However most of the time we do the first dance and leave so not much dancing ends up being filmed! It's a great idea though!! I used to shoot crowded floors with the camera held over my head when we still used to film until midnight!
