I found a program titlted Advanced Easy Mosaic and have tried the trial version, but I cannot be sure it will make a mosaic at high enough resolution to zoom in on as the video on the website does. I also found AndreaMosaic (freeware) but am having difficult using it.

It is by ArcSoft and I didn't buy it, I soon discovered other programs, but they are difficult to evaluate because of the limitations of the trial versions. ArcSoft doesn't have a trial version. I am hoping someone here will come along that has a recommendation. At least I know now that there are software programs to use for it.

One of the most effective 'mosaic' effects I have seen was in the (bear with me!!) animated-photo-montage-created-in-after-effects-and-photoshop-that-the-producers-went-on-to-make-a-dvd-about-the-making-of-it thingy.

There is a short sequence using a photomosaic and the resolution looked pretty good. I don't own the 'making of' video but I have seen it and believe it or not I actually wrote down what they said about the photomosaic software they used!

I'll see if I can find it when I get home.

A little off-topic - - I don't get involved with wedding videos personally but there were some nice ideas on display at the Glass Eye web site (albeit let down by shoddy camera work in a few cases).

One thing that puzzles me though - are wedding videographers exempt from licensing music for videos? There were a few well known hits being used in their demos and I'm pretty sure the licensing fees would be out of reach for most happy couples! I'm curious, is there some kind of blanket licence that covers weddings or do licensors turn a blind eye? Prices weren't quoted in their packages but they do say "you choose the song, we do the rest" or words to that effect.

as I recall a couple of years ago David Mathew Bonner did a sequence that had a very well done mosaic but IIRC he did it in AE.

Ian, this has been thoroughly discussed, you can probably find all the threads by doing search on music license, music copyright etc.

I would like very much to know the name of the software if you find it Ian. I agree about his nice work Ian. He is a popular videographer here in Cincinnati. I might just have to call him. He might be perfectly fine sharing his method, who knows?

I may even have a trial version of a program that does it, but as I mentioned I cannot tell with the low rez settings if I would be able to be zoom in as the example above does. I hate to spend money on an unknown even if its only $39. Another promising program is Mosaic Creator, but again, same problem with the demo vs paid version. I did search for reviews and couldn't find any from anyone I'd heard of.

Yeah, you're right Steven, it's a topic for another forum. I was just curious, is all and tacked it onto my response to Jeff's question.

I would argue that the other threads on the subject are, when read together, ambiguous to say the least! One post, written by a man who should know, says "you want to use that hit track it'll cost you $5000 or you AND your customer are breaking the law" and another, in a different thread, says "nah, there's an annual licence you can buy that covers you for as much music as you want!".

As I said, just curious. Weddings are not my thing. Not since I got married, anyway . . .

I don't know if he is the guy that first used the technique, but I have seen elsewhere a website that offers an After Effects project template for the 3d montage effect he has at the bottom of his gallery. As I say, it may be him that made it first and is selling it from a different site. Nice effect though (in shorter doses than he is demo'ing, IMO).

And it's freeware! Doesn't look much but it was the s/w used to great effect (I think) in the video montage I mentioned before (can't find the name of it though!!!).

I have no experience with this s/w so I can't compare it with others already mentioned, but as I recall, the reason they chose this product (apart from the price!) was the ability to create very large mosaics that would zoom in and out well.
