Magic Bullet looks in Vegas

Does anyone here know of any way to aproximate or even copy fully some of the looks such as Bistro from Magic Bullet using the Vegas colour correction and adjustment options?

I have heard that the looks can be downloaded for free for Premiere Pro and that all they do is use Pro's built in adjustments (I could be wrong though) to render the different looks.

Anyone know anyone with Pro that the settings can be copied from?

I have recently been involved with making a DV movie, and I have been messing around with Magic Bullet and FieldsKit on the footage to, I think, pretty good result.

I know many people like the BigFX tool for getting a film look. You may want to look at the pieces of BigFX that are currently available a http://www.zenote.com.

I don't think you can export Magic Bullet settings into Vegas. If you understand what's going on then or if the filters are similar then you could possibly achieve the same effects in Vegas. You can do a lot with the color correction tools in Vegas. The most useful filters are Curves, 3-way color corrector, CC (secondary), and saturation adjust. Channel blend may also be useful (don't know how to use that yet). Some effects you can achieve by duplicating video onto itself, dropping its opacity, and changing the compositing mode (brighten, darken, screen, etc.). You can also apply filters onto the top layer (blur, curves, etc.).

The Zenote filters with demos on their website don't add much IMO. They might be a bit higher quality than what you can do in Vegas.

Edward: I already own FilmFX for After Effects. It's okay. I'm not sure what it's glow function does that can't be done with the built in glow filter of Vegas though, and it's colour adjustments don't seem anywhere near as versitile in one pass as Magic Bullet. Granted there is a bit of a price difference between the two however!

Glenn: Yes, this is what I had in mind (finding out the settings and then replicating them with the Vegas tools). I have found that the colour adjustment tools in Vegas are more versitile than those in FilmFX on it's own.

The makers of Magic Bullet have said themselves that apart from the deinterlacing filter, most of the Magic Bullet effects can be replicated by After Effects on it's own. Given that the Magic Bullet looks are available for Premiere Pro and utilise that programs built in adjustments it should be possible to copy them.

Go over to http://www.digitalproducer.com and read Spots article on using Vegas to make video look like film. It's on the front page on the left.

Thanks Joe. Most of those techniques I'm familiar with. I can get the bleach bypass look easily by layering the video. But some of the other looks, particularly Bistro are proving harder to replicate. The Spicefilters plugin looks like it *might* have the possibility to replicate the kind of colour tonal changes across the range I am after. Then again, I'm not sure how different that plugin works to, say, the gradient filter.

Movie Looks

Is it possible to use multiple NLEs?

For example, can a program be edited and rendered in Vegas, and then be run through Premiere Pro to make use of the Movie Looks Plugins?

Yes, it could. But it would be a rather expensive way of doing things!

I've just finished a new Film-Look Plugin script for Vegas that will perform the steps indicated in DSE's Film Look tutorial. It will convert all your footage to 24p and allow adding the effects you desire to either the track or the events.

Take a look at DSE's tutorial at http://www.sundancemediagroup.com/tu...s/filmlook.htm

The film look script can be downloaded from http://www.jetdv.com/scripts/FilmLook1_0b.exe

Edward, it's a little early in the year, but in my book you are MVP of the year on this forum. (Not to detract from any of the other great folks on board). I'm just excited about this tool.

Edward,

Thanks, this may prove invaluable for many people. Some follow-up questions:

Does this mean that a 24P camera is not needed? Or does the DVX100 retain additional advantages?

Can it still be run with footage shot 24P from the DVX100?

Can this routine be run for HD footage shot with the JVC HD cameras which are already progressive? (30P)

Thanks for any additional information you may be able to provide.

Brian

This script is designed to take standard 30p footage and change it to 24p for the purpose of burning it to a DVD. A 24p camera is NOT needed. Read DSE's tutorial for full details.

The film look script has now been updated and can be found at:
http://www.jetdv.com/scripts/FilmLook1_0b.exe

Changes:
Should eliminate and "directory" errors
Eliminates a problem when a clip to be deleted is NOT in the Media Pool.

Edward, what if you want to print back to miniDV? Do you have to render it back to 30fps? If so, does that negate the 24p look?
This is my first dabble in 24p.

Oh, and which directory do you install it in?

Thanks
