Reducing volume within an event.
I'm having trouble changing the volume of an event as well as reducing volume for only a segment of that event.
Thanks for any help. |
When you mouse over the top of a clip/event on the timeline, your cursor will change. Click and drag down to lower the volume on an individual clip.

The segmential approach: On that line (the volume envelope - see Glenn's post) you can doubleclick to add points. Pull them up or down, pull the envelope line between them or rightclick the point to set an exact dB value.
|
That doesn't work. Apparently I can't insert an audio envelope on any file in this project after the first file. I've saved the job off every day as a higher version. The original will allow me to insert an envelope and change volume, the other 8 won't
Edited to try and make more sense. |
Maybe I don't understand what you mean by segment?
|
I just went back and started a new project as a test. I was able to insert and envelope and move the audio level. Now i have to find out how i locked myself out. Any thoughts.
Thanks Beas |
I can't insert an audio envelope for some reason.

Never had it happen to me. But mostly, when Vegas has had problems, it's because something else has messed with my memory. Does it go away if you close and re-open the project? If it does, forget about it. If it should happen again, maybe you'll have a better chanse to see what it was you did.

Didn't see that last post before I posted.
But firstly: I've misled you. The Volume envelope is not the line you see when you pull down the volume for the whole event. You have to press V or shift-V to get it. Or use the Insert menu. Now, are you saying nothing happens when you do that? |
Yup, I tried it again. in another project, I can steup an audio envelope. I've got several days tied up on this one. If i can't find it then i guess it's a rebuild

Are you not by accident trying to add the envelope to the event?
Because you can't. The envelop is added to the TRACK. So right- click on an EMPTY place on the track, not over the event. And when you say you can't insert it. How does this manifest itself? Is the menu item "Insert/Remove Envelope" there on the right-click menu or not? Is the item "Volume" on the submenu of that or is it greyed out? Or can you click it but apparently nothing happens? You could open a second instance of Vegas and copy the tracks from the first instance to the second. If that cures the problem you can then save the project under a new name (always a good practice) and continue on. |
The ONLY envelope that applies to a single event is the Velocity Envelope. The other envelopes (including the Volume envelope) apply to an entire track. However, you can add points on that envelope and adjust the volume for each clip as needed - it's just applied at the TRACK level.
If you want to adjust the volume of any event downward, just move the cursor to the top edge of the clip, click and drag downward. You can also Normalize any event but note that any loud peak would be what the entire event is noramlized to. I suppose, if you really wanted to, you could put each event on a separate track and control them individually as well. However, I recommend using the volume envelope. |
Thanks all
i don't l know what I did. i rebooted the computer and started fresh today. I went back a few versions (I save frequently) and voila. |
Good to hear it's working now. Sometimes a reboot does wonders!
