Rendering to QT uncompressed is sloooooow
 

Hi all,

I got a brand new I7 based laptop with 6 gig of ram, on a Vista Ultimate x64. I am running 9.0 64 bit edition.

What I am trying to do is render out an HDV project in 1440x1080 to a 720p resolution in QT uncompressed. I will then drop that into Squeeze and create FLV's.

I tried to render the entire 14 min project to the QT file but the process got stuck at about 75%. It would then slowly advance one increment at a time and between advances it will take a looooong time.

Now two weeks ago I attempted the same type of render on my XP machine but that was not HDV to 720p it was a RED 4K project rendered out to 720p and that went fine.

My memory allocation is 512, 14 thread (out of 16) and preview is off.

Any suggestions...?

I just did a test rendering out to 720p in WMV and it took less than 10 minutes.... I cancelled the QT attempts around the 1 hour mark and Vegas was telling me there would've been another 1 1/2 hour to go...

Unless you're rendering an intermediate out of Vegas for use on a Mac (or, maybe, linux), QT is almost never the choice. The encoding engine (supplied by Apple) is very slow on a PC, and sometimes doesn't play nice. If you're staying on the one PC, AVI uncompressed at 1440x1080 would be the quality leader.

Best to let squeeze do the resolution change, I think.

Another typical choice would be a high bitrate MP4 (something like ~8mbps) - a fraction of the size of the uncompressed avi, but really high quality. A high-bitrate WMV would come close to this.

In between, maybe avi/lagarith.

Or, avi/Cineform can be excellent (if you have Neoscene and squeeze sees the Cineform codec).

Since the QT engine was so slow I went on to try with WMV, which is exactly what you suggested.

Well at 8mbps it looks pret-ty good.

I don't have Neoscene so I couldn't try it.

As far as my client's needs are concerned the WMV export followed by encoding in FLV through Squeeze will be more than adequate.

Funny thoug that my RED project was able to be rendered flawlessly through the QT engine, not to mention that I jammed it full of Looks effects. It was just a 4 minute project though.
