How to Set Crossfade Outgoing and Incoming Lengths Precisely?
 

Is there a way to set the length of a crossfade by typing in a value? Or are fade lengths only changed by draging w/ the mouse the edges of the fade?

You can definitely do this via a script. Otherwise you would need to zoom in closer on the timeline. Then you can either use the mouse to move the event more precisely or use the 1/3 keys on the numeric keypad to adjust the position of the event very precisely.

You could go into Options > Preferences > Editing Tab and in Cut-to-Overlap define the time you wish the crossfade to be and select Automatically overlap selected media when added. Works great with stills.

That option is perfect before adding them to the timeline. However, it will not apply AFTER adding them to the timeline unless you use the "/" key to add the crossfade but that will extend both clips by half that amount.

Thanks much guys. It seems like the scripting power of Vegas is an area where it can really shine.

You can type in precise timecodes to move the cursor to. Then just drag the end of the clip to snap to the cursor position. I'm not in front of my edit machine now so I can't get the exact commands but I do this all the time.
