"Device couldn't be opened" problem
I just recently made the switch from XP to Windows 7, and let me state that I'm having a love/hate relationship with it. I Installed Vegas 9 on a new computer. I have been using a Panasonic DV deck (AG DV2000) to feed DV video in and also to feed a Panasonic monitor out from Vegas for play back on my old computer (XP) without any issues. On the new computer I can't get Vegas to connect to the DV2000.
In the record window when I try to reconnect I get the message: "Microsoft DV camera and VCR couldn't be opened. Please make sure that it is turned on and not being used by another application." The computer does connect with the DV-2000. I just can't get Vegas to "see" it. BTW - I connected a Canon GL-2 (using the same cable) and Vegas recognized it and connected - I could record from it if I had to. I'm stumped as to why the DV-2000 won't connect. Is this a Windows 7 thing? Any suggestions? |
Re: "Device couldn't be opened" problem
i've no idea if it's connected, but there's a few posts regarding the firewire drivers in 7 - cured (for them at least) by choosing the legacy driver....

Re: "Device couldn't be opened" problem
Yes, it's a Win7 thing. Sounds like the exact same situation (with the exact same deck) we had at church when our XP machine finally died and we had to update it and the machine came with Win7. Took us a while to find the solution but we finally did. Basically, the DV device needs to be deleted. Then when you re-add it, you need to make sure you choose the "legacy" device driver. We found the solution on Google so a quick search there would probably find you full details.

Re: "Device couldn't be opened" problem
Thanks Leslie and Ed. With your suggestions I'm almost "fixed". I changed the device driver to "legacy" and can now import and export video through the Panasonic DV-2000. BUT, I still can't get the video preview on external monitor to work. When I click the box the preview image goes full screen on my computer monitor, but does not feed out to the TV montior. The computer is connected to a Samsung 23" LCD using an HDMI cable. Is this an HDMI thing? If I had a DVI cable I'd give that a try. Any suggestions?

Re: "Device couldn't be opened" problem
Right-click the preview screen and choose "Preview Device Preferences". Change the "Device" from "Window's secondary display" to "OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394/DV". Then it should preview fine. The preview does work fine on my Win7 to DV2000.
