32 bit vs 64 bit

I have never had better render times in 64 bit...so I tried it once again with 10e
The render is one 4 hr clip 1440 x1080 60i from a somy nx70, no effects added and rendered to Sony avc
786x432 and audio bit rate of 96

Total time with 32 bit. 3:17
Total time with 64 bit. 5:10

Rendered with i7 980 with 24 gig mem and gtx460

I still have not seen any reason to go 64 bit.

Jay,

Here is the reason:

32-bit is constrained to using only about 2 to 3 GB maximum of RAM, leaving the remainder of that 24GB completely wasted. 64-bit uses far more of that installed RAM, but 64-bit Vegas does not use that RAM as efficiently as it should have.

I've never really bothered to chart render times -- that's usually time I use to go do other things. But performance on the timeline sure goes several steps up in 64-bit, and that's quite a bit more important to me than render time.

Re: 32 bit vs 64 bit

64 bit Vegas has never come with a promise for faster render time, that I know of.

As long as one has adequate amounts of memory, performance just doesn't seem improved in Vegas with gobs of memory, it's always been that way.

I'm more concerned with timeline performance than render speeds, as David as said.

I found with Vegas 8, or was it 9, that the quality of footage rendered with 64 bit seemed somehow better for me, but I have no idea why, as it made no sense to me. But the difference was significant enough I haven't used 32 bit Vegas since. I have no need for 32bit in pariticular, for it or Magic Bullet, and am happy to run one version instead of keeping two on my hard drive.

Re: 32 bit vs 64 bit

Seems like with 32-bit versions, going back to v6 or v7, and through v9 (all 32-bit), the latest greatest most compressed camera codec would show black frames or red frames with multiple clips on multiple tracks. It was always my understanding that this was due to memory demands. This happened to me with multicam HDV, with AVCHD, and with 5D footage.

The first improvement came with the memory hack that allowed 32-bit Vegas to access 3GB RAM. But, since v10 64bit came out, I've never seen that problem and I'm not going back!
