DNxHD no recompress?
 

Hey people,
Working with Mac people and need to output to DNxHD for sharing files.
Does anyone know if you can "No recompress" render DNxHD?
If yes, can it be done in Vegas, how?
So far no luck, but wanted to ask the question before wasting time on it.

The short answer is - NO.

DNxHD is a codec and not a container. DNxHD works in a MXF or MOV container.

Anything converted from a another codec to DNxHD would have to be recompressed.

Thanks Chris, but I prob wasnt clear.
Yes I know its a codec, and I can render to it fine in Vegas.
What I want to know though is when they come back to me with small changes to an 8 or 9min clip, say add another title, or change one shot,
and I already have a master in DNxHD, can I make a small change and no recompress render the rest of the clip, therefore not getting another generation of loss to the WHOLE DNxHD clip.
Im thinking there is something stopping it on the Quicktime container side of things, not sure yet though.
It should be like Cineform or Lagarith, where I can change 10 sec of footage in the middle of a 2hr clip, and it only renders the change, the rest is just a stream copy.

DNxHD is, indeed, a "lossy" codec. However, one of its features is: "Minimal degradation over multiple generations"

PS: afaik Sony Vegas will not smart-render DNxHD
PPS: I copied the following from the Sony Vegas Pro 10.0e Help file:

"When you render video to any of the following formats, unedited video frames are passed through without recompression (smart rendering):

DV AVI
DV MXF
IMX MXF (IMX 24p MXF is not supported for no-recompress rendering)
HD MXF
MPEG-2 (for files such as those from HDV and DVD camcorders)
XDCAM EX supports smart rendering across the following formats:

SP 18.3 Mbps CBR 1280x720p to/from XDCAM EX and HDV HD-1
SP 25 Mbps CBR 1440x1080i to/from XDCAM EX, XDCAM HD, and HDV HD-2
HQ 35 Mbps VBR 1440x1080 to/from XDCAM EX and XDCAM HD
HQ 35 Mbps VBR 1280x720p to/from XDCAM EX
