Determine bitrate of video?

Hi,

I do a lot of transfers of VHS and other tapes to DVD. These are typically home movies - sometimes on their 2nd transfer from film to VHS and now to DVD.

My workflow uses a couple different consumer vhs/dvd decks that allows me to transfer the tape to DVD unattended. I then will often bring into Vegas and do MINOR editing such as fade in/out and cut out some garbage or silence. No effects or transitions (unless you count the fades).

My understanding is that if I can match the original video settings, including bitrate, then Vegas will not re-compress most of the video -only the fades I think - and my rendering should be many times faster. However, I do not know how to determine the bitrate of the incoming video from the DVD, and the unit's manual only says that it's "VBR".

Is there anyway to determine this and speed up these renders? thanks!

If it's DVD-compliant video (as it should be if you get it from the DVD), then rendering out to a DVD Architect template should mean you don't have to recompress -- except for the places you changed.
