Seagate Cheetah 7000rpm but only 160GB and 8m cache is SATA

So would this be better than the 5400rpm 1TB with 64m cache - I guess is my question.

I don't know, what model is the Cheetah exactly? Is it an old model? Do you have the model #?

Harry, I've not heard of a Cheetah SATA drive, are you sure it's a Cheetah? Not a Barracuda? Cheetahs, I thought only come in SCSI and SAS versions, but I could be wrong.

Anyway, if the drive is relatively new, 160GB could be large enough for you for your OS, and fast plenty fast enough. I just don't know which drive it is for sure.

Yes it is a Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST3160318AS 160 GB Internal Hard Drive. SATA/ 300 - 7200 rpm - 8 MB Buffer - 3.5" -


I've already installed OS and several apps on the 5400 Western Digital green HD but this is the time to move that to a 7200rpm drive if that make sense.

"We sent you a better, faster, drive. For free

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by 5400 ?
The green drives are intellispeed, IE they can go faster and slower,
depending on use
When not in full use, they throttle down, to run cooler and use less power

7200 never made any sense anyway, with a average file being smaller than a
pin head, it really doesn't matter if it passes under the read head, 120
times in one second, or 90 times in one second
The head only see's the file, for 1 thousandth of a second either way,
actually, less, when it is going faster
IE, it can read more of the file, if it is turning slower
It just cant jump to the next part of the file as fast, but it can read the
file itself twice as fast

Consumers pushed for higher speeds, because they thought it was better
Its really about time a manufacturer corrected the problem"

Harry, that message is a classic. You'll save all of us some gray hair if from now on you stick with Newegg or Tiger Direct. I'll have to try that line on one of my customers who complains their video isn't long enough...I'll re-edit the video, shorten it, send it back to them and tell them it is longer, that I used a special technique, that while it appears shorter, it is really longer.

An old friend of mine used to say, "If you can't dazzle the customer with brilliance, baffle them with BS". I needed a chuckle, thanks!

I used to be exclusively Tiger Direct but they screwed me over about 8 years ago and haven't dealt with them since. I've got a great memory ;-)

Yes, I don't really care for Tiger Direct, but have used them. I went through my order history with Newegg recently and since 2006 I've never had an issue with a single purchase, excluding a defective product or two which they promptly made good. Great company. I've never paid a restocking fee for returning items I changed my mind about. Always get prompt refunds, no hassle.

Live and Learn...

Plugged all my USB hard drives into a Belkin 7 port USB hub late last night and none of the drives appeared. I then read the dismal reviews about how that hub overheats and quits working. I've a new 10 port hub today which has had nothing but great reviews and lots of them. Plus is was only 35 incl s/h.
