According to Jan Ozer's excellent book "Video Compression for Flash, Apple Devices and HTML5", the iP4:
screen resolution: 960x640 decodes h.264 at Main to Level 3.1 at a max datarate of 14Mbps, though you'd want to use a lot less supports a max video resolution of 720p Will this file be loaded via iTunes? 3g/4g connection? WiFi? These useages might be something you consider when creating the distribution clip. |

Re: Best format to render for the I PHONE 4Gs
I had a 1080p h264 movie in my itunes library for a while that would never load on to my iPhone 4, after the big update a month or so ago it now happily syncs and loads onto the phone.
I dont really get it though, unless you are going to somehow play back out of the phone onto a monitor, a 640x360 2.2mbps movie looks just as good on the phone as a HD version. |

I've been very happy with Handbrake for encoding iPad video, there are iPhone presets too, as well as full customization for MP4/M4V. It's really good for this sort of thing, does great deinterlacing & resizing as well as a great encode.
