Can't Render as QuickTime!

I'm getting an error message when I try to render my 95 minute film as a QuickTime .mov. It seems to be rendering for about a third of the movie then it stops (with nothing ending up being rendered) and the message says "Make sure you have write access to the file/folder and that there is enough free space." I've got 90 gigs free, which should be enough and I've rendered the movie as .avi and .mpeg2 with no probem. Is the problem the "write access to the file/folder" and what do I do for that? Thank you.

Where are your "temporary" files being written? That can be found on the General tab in Options - Preferences. While you're looking, check out the "Pre-rendered files" folder in File - Properties.

Ed,

They're both set for:

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Sony\Vegas\5.0\

And how much free space is on drive C:?

I would change them both to point somewhere else (i.e. your media drive to a "Temp" folder or something of that nature) and then, at some point, clear out the files that are in C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Sony\Vegas\5.0\

There's 90 gigs free on the C: drive.

Could it have something to do with QuickTime or its settings, specifically? As I mentioned, when I render as .avi and mpeg2, there's no problem.

Actually, yes it could. I didn't know if drive C was the same drive as the "90 Gig free" drive.

When you install Quicktime, you MUST choose "Custom". When given the options of which components to be installed, the "Authoring Tools" MUST be selected. Without the authoring tools, MOV files won't work correctly in Vegas.

Thank you, Ed. That does sound like it could be it. Do I have to go to the QuickTime site to re-install it or can I just adjust the settings on my current version? (That question sounded like it might be kinda dumb as I wrote it, but I had to ask.)

Edward Troxel September 12th, 2005 01:38 PM

You have to reinstall. Then when given the option, choose "Custom" as the type of install. That will get all the other install options listed.

Thank you, Ed. As someone once said, "...They should give you a cape."
