Hola Marcus, m2t files from HDV cameras are very easy these days for modern CPUs to play back smoothly, even older CPUs can handle them with little problem.
You haven't listed your computer specs or stated what version of Vegas you are using but I would suspect that you need to upgrade your CPU to a sandybridge or Ivybridge i7 .
modern CPUs have no problem with real time playback of DSLR footage.
If you are using Vegas 11 then it could be that you need to upgrade your graphics card or select CPU playback only as Vegas 11 can use either for playback.
In my case I have an Intel i7 ivybridge CPU running at 4.3 ghz and it gives flawless playback of any footage I give it using Vegas 10e.

best wishes john

Seems like a few of us are getting less than stellar preview...

I've still got 10e but only in 32 bit...sold on my licence...
