Vegas Pro 17 coming in August! NESTED TIMELINES!!

Just saw Vegas Pro 17 is coming in August. Nested timelines! Yes! I just upgraded from Vegas Pro 12 to 16 two weeks ago and I'm really diggin it. Looks like any buyer of Vegas Pro 16 from now through the end of the month gets a free upgrade to 17. I emailed them asking if I qualify which I should, according to me lol.

Well, just watched how Vegas Pro 17 handles nested timelines. Rather let down to be honest. Seems like all it does is speed up the process of embedding other Vegas Projects rather having actual accessible nested timelines within the Project like Premiere Pro does. So basically to modify the "nested" timeline, you have to open up another project.

Makes me feel good I have not upgraded ever since v.15. :)

It prevents you from needing to open Vegas a second time. It just switches to the other project in that same Vegas instance.

Ed, do you know if Vegas Pro 17 will support HEVC files? Right now DaVinci seems to be the only one that will handle Canon's HEVC. Bob

My wish list is:

Routing to allow sidechain compression.

Aux sends on buses that can route to effects buses.

Gain line automation.

According to the Vegas Creative Software Web page, yes it does support HEVC/h265 both as source files and rendering out.

Steve, thank you. I was hoping that it would. Bob

Re: Vegas Pro 17: free trial

In case it's not obvious to someone else too -
The free trial limits rendering to 2 minute projects, including preventing selective rendering of a <2 min portion within a larger project.
Work done in the free trial can't be opened in an older version.

Anyone using 17 successfully? I’m using with windows 10, 32gb ram and a fast i7 processor but get continuous freezes and crashes. I should add I’m using a lot of 4k video and 8k stills so could be that it just can’t handle the file sizes but my older windows 7 computer didn’t crash as often with 16 using similar files.

I bought it for the slow motion plugin which I like better than twixtor but so far it’s hard to get any work done.

My experience with v17 has been similar to yours but I'm now getting reasonable performance on an OC'd 8700K with a GTX 1080Ti card. The Internal Preferences settings that are getting me there are as outlined in the JPGs below. The File I/O is available under the normal Preferences tab. If you are using 422 10-bit files after the S04 change and have issues then you will more than likely have to revert back to the S04 default setting of TRUE. Let us know how you go. Also sometimes disabling OpenCL can help depending on you machine config but I wouldn't go there yet until you have tried these settings.

Started by changing the "memory needed by Vegas" from default to 4096. Night and day difference so far.

Thanks Chris,

Can confirm that Chris's changes make a big difference to HVEC playback in Vegas 17. (I did not change the SO4 setting)

I just purchased a Pana CX350 to shoot UHD50P 10bit hvec files and Vegas 17 would struggle on replay. This was also after updating rig to a i9 9960X series 16 core, RTX2070 super, 64 gig DDR4 and 2x NVMe PCIe inputs and SSD output drives. I thought this rig would nail it :0 And now it does work OK after above changes.

Weird that VLC and KMPlayer both would replay the 50P 10bit HVEC files smoothly, but V17 would not.

Re: Vegas Pro 17 coming in August! NESTED TIMELINES!!

+1. Glad it helped.

Players like VLC etc are just single purpose, or basically single purpose players although they do have some additional functions. Most NLEs have a lot going on under the hood running all the other aspects of their software at the same time and usually can't be as efficient as a dedicated player. Also Vegas on its existing code base has never been super efficient with GPU support unlike NLEs like Resolve which seem to run with greater ease on footage Vegas struggles with.

Re: Vegas Pro 17 coming in August! NESTED TIMELINES!!

I have Vegas 16 and there was always a problem with burning a Blu-Ray disc direct from the timeline. Apparently whatever the problem is/was has also corrupted being able to burn a Blu-Ray from Vegas 15 or 13 now. In other words, I can't take 4K video and burn to any resolution above 720. I can create the image file but I can't burn it. My question about Vegas 17 is this: Have they now corrected the issues with burning Blu-Ray discs directly from the timeline?

Sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong place but just trying to figure out if Vegas 17 is any better for Blu-Rays than previous versions.

Re: Vegas Pro 17 coming in August! NESTED TIMELINES!!

Not having any problems here in v17 creating ISO's of any dimensions or frame rates. Never burn from Vegas or DVDA though because of previous iissues. Especially if you want to burn a 4K disc. I use ImgBurn. No problems with any size/format with that software... So far! Free software with a great following. Give it a try.

Trying out the trial of the New Vegas. Nice to be home after a long time away :)
Ill ask here rather than a new thread.
Is there a way in 17 to have a simple adjustment layer for FX and/or Pan Crop?
Im sure I used to do this but cant remember how.....

I've just upgraded to 17 but I don't have accesss to Pluraleyes in this version, so I'm working between 13 & 17 - I do the syncing in 13 and import the veg onto the v17 timeline. However, I believe there is a clunky method within v17?

Rainer Listing April 27th, 2020 05:17 PM

Re: Vegas Pro 17 coming in August! NESTED TIMELINES!!

Not too clunky, just a bit hard to find. Select the audio you want to sync, then go tools>multicamera>synchronize audio to align events. Probably still better to do it manually.

Re: Vegas Pro 17 coming in August! NESTED TIMELINES!!

Shame when Pluraleyed works so well. Of course you cn't get it now without buying a whole suite for $$$$$

Edit:
I'll have to see how it goes when I get all the material from the other 4 performers (of the band in lock-down) and see how easy (or not) it is then to use the nested vegs from v13 in v17 for the final edits...

Re: Vegas Pro 17 coming in August! NESTED TIMELINES!!

Gerald, I'm not sure I'm understanding what you're asking for. Effects can be added on the event, track, media, or project level.

As for Plural Eyes, I think you have to copy a DLL over to the proper location in the Vegas Pro 17 folder.

Re: Vegas Pro 17 coming in August! NESTED TIMELINES!!

Yes, but you have to buy Shooter now to get the version that works in Vegas 17.
