First Video created by Vegas Pro & Your chance to win Vegas Pro 17

The Pigiron Shuffle: The First Ever Video Edited in VEGAS Pro

20 years ago, Sonic Foundry—known then as an innovator in the digital audio software space—had the nerve to presume that they could enter into the non-linear video editing world. Loyal users know just how unique the video-editing experience in VEGAS was at the time, and still remains unique among the players in the NLE space.

Those early days were exciting times for those of us who were involved back then. When the development team started talking about video editing capabilities, my colleague on the training team (Michael Bryant, which is a familiar name to many long-time users) and I convinced one of the lead engineers to show us how to unlock the video features which were actually built into VEGAS Pro 1.0, but not yet exposed to users.

You've all likely heard of “beta testing”, but we were way ahead of that. We were pre-alpha testing! We were using features that were in their infancy. The had not been tested and in many cases not yet fully conceptualized, let alone finished.

But we were anxious to get started, so we developed the habit of hitting Ctrl+S any time we moved the mouse and set about learning to edit video in VEGAS Pro. During one late-night session, we grabbed a video camera (“cutting-edge” DV!) and started shooting scenes around our offices. We heard a train whistle and ran outside to shoot the train as it rumbled past. We enlisted the help of two talented musicians on staff (Rick Hoefling and Mark Siegenthaller) to create a cool blues vibe for a sound track, and we put it all together in what became the very first complete video ever edited in VEGAS Pro: The Pigiron Shuffle.

We're proud to show you this video 20 years later. Be gentle: not only was it the first video ever edited in VEGAS Pro, but it was the first video Michael and I ever shot and edited. You can easily see how much I had still yet to learn about the arts of shooting and cutting! Nonetheless, I'm quite proud to say that Michael and I are the first to edit a complete project in VEGAS Pro. So much has happened since then, and it's been a true joy to see just how far video projects have come since VEGAS got into the hands of the amazingly talented editors who use it day in and day out for their projects.

So, enjoy The Pigiron Shuffle video, and let us know what you think. But remember: be gentle!

Sincerely,

Gary Rebholz, VEGAS Product Owner

Setiawan, I'm just curious... what is your role at MAGIX?

Are you a full-time employee, or a freelance contractor for them?

Thank you Setiawan for clarifying that you do social media work for MAGIX on a voluntary basis (I chose not to publish that particular reply).

Please be advised that I will not allow links to or mentions of any FaceBook groups on this site under any circumstances. DV Info Net does *not* send traffic to FaceBook groups.

I would like to encourage you to send people *here* from FaceBook or anywhere else. We're in the business of increasing activity on DV Info Net. We're not in the business of sending people away from DV Info Net.

Thanks for understanding.

Shot in 2000 using Newvicon tube cameras which were old even then and produced almost no color in low light but they were all I could get my hands on. Probably edited on Video Factory or perhaps Vegas Video 3.0.

I’m glad to hear that. As someone who does not have a FB account (never have and never will), I really hate it when someone wants me to go there. But here I come at least once a day.

Much appreciated, Adam.

DV Info Net had a real-names policy back when Mark Zuckerberg was still in high school. At some point I *might* allow folks to log-in to DVi from FaceBook, but as far as I'm concerned the flow of traffic needs to be one-way: from them to us... from a worse experience to a better one. From a place that mines your personal data, to one that doesn't, one that's much less nefarious and much more transparent. Not to mention devoid of political garbage.

Chris is right to do this.

Investing in a presence on Facebook isn't a good way to spend money or time as the fruits of your efforts can be switched off, compromised or even deleted at will with no recourse. With a web site you remain in control, beyond the fad of the next MySpace.

Andrew
