How to store and manage metadata

Hi,

Can anyone know how to store metadata (data about when clip was taken, what is on it, maybe where) just like one can store metadata in JPEGs with EXIF.

Specificaly: I have a SD9 camcorder that produces M2TS files that include an H.264 video stream and a Dolby Digital (AC3) audio stream. I would not like to convert the streams - my wish is to move them as they are into another container and add metadata. But according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compari...tainer_formats AVI does not support such streams and only Matroska would. But how much practical possibilities would Matroska give me? Would it be possible to store files in Picasa as I do for the rest of my pictures and clips?

If there is no answer today - is there a standard that intend to support this in the future?

Thanks,
Gordan
