Nano prone to cosmetic wear?
 

Hey all,

I just came back from a local dealer preparing for the eventual purchase of a EX1R and NanoFlash combo. I'm getting a rental nano unit for $1200 less than MSRP, used for a year, and the immediate thing I noticed was the lettering was worn near the CF ports. The buttons still looked fine, but there was a lot of wear near the CF ports. I came with a CF card to test out the slots, and they were fine. It also lacked a serial number sticker

Is this a similar situation to the EX1's letter wearing? I'm just curious cause it's a slight nuisance...

Dear Jack,

On some early units we had problems with the Screen Printing on the side of the nanoFlash, the CompactFlash card side rubbing off.

If this is a problem, we can replace that part of the case.

I will be completing the purchase in around a weeks time. Should I (and apologies for the name dropping in advance) allow Genesis Matrix Video to send the unit into you guys to fix this issue? This would also include getting a serial number sticker unless there is a function in the firmware to discover the unit's serial number.

It's specifically the screen printed areas that are worn, this includes the I/O ports and the CF slots.

Dear Jack,

Either you or your dealer may send in a dealer for refurbishment.

We do have a way to extract the serial number, but I do not know the technique at this time.

We could work out something for you, for a serial number sticker.

Our prices for repair and refurbishment are very low, but we do have to quote on each specific request.
We can usually quote in advance, prior to your shipping us an item.

I will ask for Matrix to send it in and include that fee in my overall quote to be paid in around a week's time. A slight delay in getting my nano wouldn't hurt if it means a double check of everything to ensure 100% uptime.

It would be cool if CD sold a replacement for the LCD cover protector that end users can install or a mail-in service for $30-50.

A similar thing happened to my new Nano. The soundie taped a radio mic around the nano bracket and partly taped over the letters and ripped the letters of when the mic was taken off. I was pretty hacked off as thought it should have withstood a bit of tape over it. Looks pretty crappy now :(

I agree. I have taped a piece of tough plastic over the front of my unit to stop scratching. Some sort of protector film or cover would be good. Or is there one that I dont know about?

Dear Gints,

Yes, it would be nice if we charged $50 or less for replacement of the LCD Cover (and Keypad) if this part gets damaged.

And we do! It takes us at least one hour to remove the existing Keypad/LCD Cover, replace the part, and then retest the unit, and perform other services. We charge $50.

Dan, have you done this for nanoFlashes from the UK? If you have I wonder how long it takes and what would be needed to keep the Customs on both sides happy without having to pay any duty,

We have been working to provide a protective cover for our LCD.

I have ordered a 100 or so of these covers, custom cut for the nanoFlash.

But, then appear to have gotten lost in shipment in Shipment. We have been trying to track them down for the past week.

Yes, we do this for customers in the UK and all other countries.

Yes, preparing the proper customs paperwork for returns for repair can be problemmatic.

Dear Tim,

I am very sorry that this has happened.

Here is the cause of our problems with the lettering:

The letters are screen printed.

The powder-coat surface of the nanoFlash is not smooth, as we chose a textured surface coating.

This was a mistake, as the silk screen letters do not get good adhesion to the surface.

Since you are in New Zealand, shipping back to the US is relatively expensive.

Please contact me if you ever need your unit serviced for any reason. I will try to remedy the situation then, or if you want to send it in, just contact me.
