Rendering test's on New system
 

Hello all I have my new system built and running pretty good at this point but I'm little baffled by my raid0 setup. I did two rendering tests on the same file with After Effects CS3 the first test I rendered to the Raid Drive and it rendered out at 2:25 minutes the file size was 3.91 gigs the second test I rendered to the Desktop and it only took 2:04 seconds. I though going to Raid setup speed things up? Maybe something is wrong with my setup. Any suggestions would be so much appreciated.

Are the original files stored on the Raid? And you are rendering and saving to the same raid? That would be why it took longer.

Your best results would be with the original files stored on the raid and rendering your new video to a different hard drive.

Thank's for the reply. The save file was on the Raid and thats all I used. The test was just a little 30 second animation I did with a preset so there was no other files. So I should not render to the Raid set up just keep all the original video on that drive. I will give that a try and see how that goes.

I just did the same test on my 2 year old system specs below and it took 5:46 to render the same animation so I'm really happy how much faster the new system is. Now I hope to render some HDV and see what the speeds are there.

Rendering, expecially HD rendering, is far more dependent on CPU throughput than modern SATA disc speeds. The key thing to see if your disc or array is limiting you is to go to the "performance" tab in the task manager (control/alt/delete) and see if you are at 100% CPU utilization. If so, disc, backside and front side bus and RAM speed are not limiting you.
