JVC minidv/vhs deck probs with XL1?

I am interested in purchasing a combo VHS/minidv deck. I've been looking at the JVC HR-DVS2, which seems like a decent deck at a decent price. But I've seen a couple posts saying that the XL1s isn't always compatible with this system. If anyone has had experiences, good or bad, with this XL1-JVC combo, please let me know.

And if anyone has alternative deck suggestions, I'd love to hear them. I haven't seen too many others on the market for similar prices (under $1000).

I've heard mixed reviews of the JVC, some love it and others can't get it to work right. I would try it, but be sure it can be returned if it doesn't meet your editing needs.
