The FX7 uses 1/4" sensors. The smaller the sensor, the easier it is to make outrageous zoom ranges. What suffers mostly is the wide end, hence you normally see 38-44mm (in 35FF equiv) as their...

same video performance

Since this is a video site, I am guessing that as far as video goes, the video performance will be the same as the 7d/550d. The flip screen however, will prove a god-send as it will make the process...

Others have pointed out the weakness. And yes, focusing can be hard. Even if you get those rings to help rotate it, the travel distance of the focus ring is too short for precision work. And I don't...

3d editing

Jonathan, Dan,

Thanks for the input on editing. It's seems that it may be straightforward as you claim. Unfortunately, learning a new NLE is another extra work coming from Vegas (unless Vegas...

how to edit it in to come output in 3D

Andrew,

Thanks for the link. At least there's more to it now

My question now, is - how do you edit or render your video to come out with a 3D output? I presume, the 21k price tag still...

my three

If I were to have only 3 lenses, good for video and photo it would be:

- canon ef-s 10-22 f3.5-4.5 usm
- tamron 17-50 f2.8 di-2 VC
- canon 70-200 f2.8L IS

The 10-22 has a FOV of 16-35mm....

Close Call

Elliot,

It's a close call in certain areas. The FX1 is a classic. It's image quality is good out of the box/camera without any customization. Of course, it has its share of quirks and...

sdhc and sdxc

I would not worry too much about the sdxc unless you really want more than 1 hour storage worth of video. A 16gb sdhc is about 48min and a 32gb, close to 2 hours and 32gb being the limit of sdhc....

tamron 17-50 VC

Roger,

Thanks for posting your impression on the tamron 17-50 VC. Looks like a winner to me. I just have to note what you have written there about the limitations I have to work around with.

Our experience

Last year, we were able to use an A1, HV-20, HV-30 and the Sony HC3. Here is our impression.

Out of the box, the smaller cameras were easy to use. The colors were vibrant and good without any...

17-50 tamron

Fei Meng,

It's a sharp copy with no AF problems. Also partly sentimental reasons as I've used this lens for about 3 years with all sort of projects and it is rock solid. Hard to find something...

550d vs 7D

Roger S.

Thank you for your impressions on the 7D vs 550d. I was able to test the beta of the 7D and I figure that it should basically be the same as far as video goes with the 7D. It's nice of...

In Asia too, it's called the 550d, except in Japan where the Rebel is a "Kiss" camera.

why others can' step up

Ian, I think the reason why Nikon and Sony can't step up is because of the way they designed their sensors. I think they did a great job in the read out as far as photo goes. But the video readout is...

But if these cameras are coming still in April, that would be the only time you can hold them, right? You will still be waiting.

Unless size is an issue, or the extra U$400, I suggest you take...

GH1 update

I don't think you can upgrade the firmware to fix that weak codec. I think the upgrade needed will be on the GH2 or whatever they call the GH1 replacement. I think the problem is the weak Venus...

gh1 and the hf-s100

Robert,

I think the serious weakness of the GH1 at this point in time is the 1080-24p. Go to the 720-60p and you are basically ok. The other weakness is the lack of lenses at this point in time...

go for the hf-s100

Dan,

The 7d and some lens can be heavy. And it becomes heavier as the day wears on. Trust me, use your hf-s100 instead. The others have pointed out the reasons and i agree with them. I myself...

Me too

Kevin, I do the same as you do. I am at home editing with my 3 year old notebook (2.0ghz c2d with 3gb ram, now with 500gb HD). I have the older Q8200 quad OC'd to 3.2ghz and use that in rendering or...

For sure, 32nm is needed to get power consumption in check. I think though, that if only for editing, it may be useful. It's really in the render phase that the cpu consumes a lot of power. For...
