Just ran some tests backing up 16GB SxS cards to XDCAM discs data folders using a PDW-HD1500 deck. It takes about 15 min for each card (57 min. of footage shot at 35mbps), not bad. I assume using a PDW-U1 drive should yield similar times.

Thierry, it sounds like the PDW-1500 is a lot faster than the U1. I did a test a few weeks ago and it took 36:01 to copy 17.1GB of clips from the internal HD of my MacPro to the "UserData" folder of a 50GB optical disk using the PDW-U1.

Interesting.... Is the SxS card in your Mac or did you attached the camera to the computer via the USB cable? I'll do a test with the U1 for comparison.

PDW1500 has dual lasers so can read and write faster, I seem to recollect

Neither. The BPAV folder I wanted to burn to the optical disk was already sitting on the hard drive of my MacPro. It had been transferred from an SxS card weeks ago.
I was only interested in testing how long it would take to burn data to the disc, and didn't want any other variables to interfere.

The type of data I was buring to the disc didn't matter. I'm sure that the results would have been the same for any 17GB of files on my computer.

Doug, you were right about the write time using a U1. It took about 37 minutes for a full 16GB SxS card. I was just under the assumption that the dual laser on the PDW-HD1500 was just improving read speads but obviously, it speeds up writing as well. About 2.5 times faster than U1.

Thierry, thanks for confirming. It is always good to get a second opinion.
