I also use the Series 7 EX-L96 battery & love it!

Indeed the EX-L96 is a good one.

I'm far from home (where I left the light and the battery, when it seemed to me that the battery wouldn't charge), so I can't try it now

I'm home now, and first thing this morning I re-read Chris's advice (above) and looked at Erwin's excellent battery review, which contained the same directive: "When charging on the standard Sony BC-U1 charger be sure to connect the small power cable back in it's holder. Otherwise it won't charge"

I tried this, and the battery that I thought wouldn't charge in my Sony charger started charging!

All to say, my conundrum has been solved.
