Field Monitor A Requisite?

Do you think a field monitor is imperative for a successful production? What are its advantages in your opinion? Do these advantages offset the fact that they are usually more expensive, require batteries, and will be more to carry around? I'd like to buy a monitor soon but I'm divided between a cheaper in-studio monitor or something that can pull off double roles as an in-studio monitor for editing and for those occasions out on location.

The Sony 8 inch series works well for both field work and production. They are a standard, but pricey. If you are considering used, sometimes, good deals can be found. JVC also has some nice 9 inch monitors.

Cost wise, LCD monitors, offer a lot of bang for the buck in a field monitor. But they don't do well has a production monitor.

Both LCD and field moniotrs have been discussed before. Try the search button and you may find some good areas of interest and suggestions.

Thanks for the help Jeff. On a related note, do you think that a carrying case or hood is a good idea for a field monitor or too much money already?

Hoods are very useful for field work, almost indespensable. I use an old camera bag to transport the monitor.
