Bride is FAT on DVD!
 

I have burned my very first DVD with Adobe Encore.

It is a simple project, right from PrePro CS5.5 to Encore, one 4 minute Sequence, no menus.

Everything seemed to go well.
But when I put the DVD in my player, it stretched, left to right, to fill the screen and this skewed the video our of proportion?

I thought this was just an annomolie of my TV/DVD combo, but I got a call from a client eirler today saying that it is doing the same thing on their new 42" plasma?

My video is a standard 1920x1080p video, and I am running Encore in the "default" settings?

Any thoughts of how to fix this issue serious issue?

From what you have said it sounds that you have filmed or edited to 4:3 and its stretching to 16:9 when you play back.

Thanks for the reply Ray, but that's not it...
It plays fine on the computer in digital, on my iPad, Apple TV and even when I put the DVD in a computer, ot plays fine at 16x9.

It is only jacked when the DVD is Played in a standard DVD layer.

Chris according to your website you're pretty experienced so the place I'd start is by asking what you've done differently this time as opposed to the others - I assume you did a test on the new software?.

You also don't say if you recorded in HD, HDV or SD nor how you edited it - as Ray correctly suggests it sounds like it's the playback of 4:3 material stretched to widescreen.

I'm not a user of the same software as you but I think those who are will need more information if they're going to be able to help.

This is really frustrating for me because the client had backed out of a 150 DVD order until I can get this resolved (if I can get it resolved).

I shot in 1920x1080p on a Sony NX5u in AVCHD
I am editing it in Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 and I am using the Dynamic Link to Encore.

I took some images form another DVD/Video that I am also trying to produce and added a white circle to it from Photoshop.

Image 1: Encore Settings (I did double check to make sure Encore is set to 16x9)

Chris, you'll have to wait for someone who knows more about your software than me sees the post I'm afraid but image no 2 looks to me suspiciously as if the TV has been set to super wide or some similar description for showing Cinemascope-type (2.35:1) films.

Hey Chris

This might be a silly suggestion but it has happened to me!!! Go to the DVD player and push the setup button on the remote and make sure that the player aspect is, in fact, 16:9 and also zoom is disabled. I have had 4:3 videos stretched out by wrong player settings and also 16:9 clips squashed or completely distorted just cos the DVD player setup was wrong.

VLC plays full screen by default so also check the vid on your puter with VLC normalised and make sure it too, isn't stretched.....also I assume you did render this to an SD setting like 720x480 16:9 ?????

Chris,

Your transcode default settings are incorrect. Setting your resolution at 720X480 will make for overweight brides, something they really frown on. Try 1280X720, you and your bride will be much happier.

720x480 (NTSC) is correct for DVD.
1280x720 maybe for Blu-ray or other media but not for DVD.

Are there black bars on the top and bottom of the image on your TV? There should not be.
Perhaps you have nested the 16:9 video in a 4:3 output which creates the bars for viewing un-stretched 16:9 video on older tv's?

Chris you didn't say, or I missed it if you did, if you sent the seequence directly to Encore or if you rendered first using Adobe Media Encoder. If you sent the sequence directly to Encore, why don't you try rendering it in AME first then import the mpg2 file into Encore and see if that works out. Also, double check your sequence settings in PP and make sure they match the footage your using. Good luck.

This is correct, which makes me think it's a pixel aspect ratio thing. I don't recall the correct pixel aspect ratio for widescreen 16:9 dvd, so someone correct me if I'm wrong, but is it not 1.2?

The pixel aspect ratio for 4:3 DVD is .9, so if you can find this setting somewhere and see it's either .9 or 1, then I would wager that is likely the problem.

You will have no problem burning a four minute sequence to a regular DVD using the Blu Ray authoring mode. Try it.
