Anyone use security camera system for 3D?

I am trying to grasp some of the concepts of 3D video creation and based on what I have been reading in these threads most people are using very expensive cameras and rigs and generally seem to be in the pro category, not consumer category. So I have been thinking of trying to use a security system to capture stereo images to disk and then copying these files, H.264, to a PC for editing. The typical security system is well under $1000 and usually has four cameras in my area, the fact that it is designed for capturing mulitple video streams seems ideal and the cameras are small enough to be placed close together. However since I didn't see anyone mention doing this it makes me think there may be some very serious drawbacks making it difficult to do, etc.

I am not looking to make a video for resale, more of a matter of understanding the convergence aspects, 1::30 rules, alignment issues, synchronization, etc. Other than thinking about this I have not moved forward yet to try it out, but if anyone has some inexpensive suggestions about how this might be done I am open to them. Thanks.
