Editing DVCPro HD in Premier Pro 2.0

Hey guys, I have a fairly stupid question: Someone just sent me DVCPro HD 1080i60 footage in QT format, and I'm wondering what I need to do in order to edit it in PP2? I am able to import the files fine and get all of the properties, but the video comes up as white nothingness. Is there a codec for this? I don't necessarily need to edit in native DVCProHD.

Unfortuately there is not QT codec on the PC for decoding the MOV wrapped DVCPRO-HD data. If you can get the original MXF data that the camera recorded there are many more PC options.

Premiere Pro can't do anything with those files, but EDIUS or Avid XPress Pro 5.5 can read them. Apple has chosen to not make the DVCPRO-HD codec available on the PC. You need to use a program that has its own DVCPRO-HD codec, such as EDIUS Broadcast or AXP. Then you can export the files to a format that Premiere could read.

Or, go back to the Mac and have them export the files in a different format.

As David said, getting ahold of the original MXFs would give you the most options.

Thank you for the advice. If I go back to the Mac what format do you recommend I export to for the best usability in PP2? Motion JPEG perhaps?

The best format would be uncompressed. Short of that there's not really a good HD editing codec on PP2.0, is there? I haven't looked at Premiere since 6.0 so I don't know much about it, so I don't know if it has any editing codecs that work well for HD.

Serious Magic DVCPro HD Decoder for Sony Vegas & Adobe Premiere Pro Users is included in DVRack 2.0 HD

NLE Compatibility to read full-resolution MXF files from the Panasonic HVX-200

The DVCProHD Decoder makes it easy to convert MXF files into standard QuickTime or AVI files. It is a Video for Windows (VfW) decoder that installs onto PCs and allows most non-linear editors, such as Sony® Vegas®, Adobe® Premiere® Pro, and Apple® Final Cut® Pro, to decode and edit DVCProHD files in a more universal format without having to transcode.

Fast Batch Conversion
Pull your Panasonic footage directly off a P2™ card or a hard drive and quickly convert the file to QuickTime or AVI using the converter tool included with the decoder. There is no transcoding or re-encoding of the video or audio, so the process is completely lossless. It's also fast. A one-minute MXF file typically takes less than 20 seconds to convert to AVI.

Seamless workflow in Sony Vegas or Adobe Premiere Pro
Whether you edit in Sony Vegas or Adobe Premiere, your converted AVI's will drag and drop right onto the timeline. Files converted to QuickTime can be brought over to a Mac and will be read by Final Cut Pro. No more worrying about compatibility or codec issues – the DVCProHD Decoder ensures that your workflow remains simple.
