Using rode videomic on boom pole?

Hi,
I bought a rode videomic a while back from BH photo/video; the audio from it seems great, but I can't help but think in a lot of cases I'd get better audio by putting it on a pole and getting close, I'm just not sure this mic is designed with that purpose in mind?

I've personally modified mine so that there is no mount (not really modified-- you can take off the whole suspension system so it directly mounts to a cam, which is what I've done); If I get a nice 5 metre jack to jack cable and a half decent boom pole, will this mic do the job? (would be used for recording everything from interviews, short movies, and a lot more)

Thanks in advance for any replies...

EDIT: Am using a Canon XH A1

The closer you can get the mic to the subject, the better the sound.

If you listen to the RODE Videomic sample on this page http://dvestore.com/theatre/mics_guide.html
It is on a 20' XLR cable with the RODE VXLR.

Works great for price! The Videomic can be attached to a variety of stands and poles as the bottom is threaded for 1/4" and 3/8"

Hope this helps,
