It's to allow you plug in an external USB drive for file transfer, additonal file storage, or backup.

What Steve says is true. That's in the manual, but I haven't been able to get it to do anything with any USB flash drive I've plugged into it - regardless of format (FAT16, FAT32).

I'm sure there's a secret to it. But the manual offers no clue.

I just back up to my laptop.
