military tank mic

As a seventh grader many years ago, I enjoyed scrounging through streetside trash piles and one of the more interesting things I found was a tank commander's helmet with a mic which was snapped across the guy's throat instead of to his mouth.
In the book, $30 Film School, I read that you want a high mic rather than one on the chest to keep the rumble from the chest out. So are any of you tank commanders and what would the voice sound like to the other guys in the tank?
