shotgun options for trv950
 

hello, I recentely purchased a trv950. I want to connect a decent shotgun mic for ambient and audio. was wondering if anyone had any suggestions...also if you know a good mount to go with it to eliminate the cam noise, that would be appreciated!

Try the Rode VideoMic, that kind of camera is exactly what it's designed for.

A shotgun mic for ambience? Are you sure you want a highly directional microphone for that? A shotgun mic can sometimes be very very annoying if it happens to be too narrow. You try to record the soundscape and notice that it is just too wide for the mic (or you are too close). That doesn't feel good - especially if you left the other mics at home. The trv950, of course, has built in stereo mics. If those capture too much camera noise, then you could consider a higher quality external stereo mic or mono cardioid mic. If you, on the other hand, want to record a more narrow field, then there are various alternatives ranging roughly from cardioid to hyper cardioid to shotgun to parabolic and laser mics.

To capture the general atmosphere I would probably get a one-point stereo mic and to record talking groups and for "general use" I would use a higher quality cardioid. A shotgun is nice when trying to record one persons speech in a noisy environment...
