Is there anyway to level out Audio to one constant level?

Audio is an area that I'm not the best at, when I record Live Wrestling Events I record commentary into a Zoom H1 and the rest of the background noise comes from the cameras.

Now with the Zoom H1, I can't monitor and adjust for when they talk loader or quieter so just wondered is there a way to equally level out the audio to a decent level (-6).

And what do people use for Audio Levels for Web and DVD use. I don't have anything that's Broadcast based, so I've read that people don't stick to the -12 area when doing Web use as it'd be too quiet.

Thanks
Matt

Hi Matt,

Audio is not my strong suit either, but a few years ago I learned how to use the Compressor/Limiter in the NLE and that will do what you want. I'm using Premiere, but most packages should include in some form. Or of course if the Levelator does the same thing faster/easier/better, then go for it, I'm going to try that myself.

Thanks

Matt, have you tried Auto-Levels on the H1? You may be pleasantly surprised. I know its counter-intuitive and anathema to most audio pros but in the right circumstances it can be your get out of jail free card. Particularly at events like wrestling where there is significant ambient sound at all times you shouldn't need to worry about noise floors at quieter moments.

Another option would be to use a second H1 - they are very cheap after all - and have each set to different levels, then in post select the most appropriate parts. And use the Normalise and Compressor functions in your editor.

Or just lav up the wrestlers and monitor :- )
