You need to put the MPIC on the threads, then insert rods. Once you've done it a couple times, it's easy. If I'm removing the MPIC, I just loosen up the rod tighteners, push the rods back towards the camera, and unscrew the MPIC.

There is an LED indicator to show you the speed rate. So regarding knowing if the battery is low, it's basically a matter of paying attention to how bright the LED is/should be, and also listening to the speed periodically.
