Has anyone mounted gy-hd 101 on jimmy jib b4? Im planning to replace my z1 with gy-hd 101. I love the fact that z1 has quick respond in focusing (auto focus) when its flying on the air, my question is how good jvc focusing? Also im using matrox rtx2 to capture my HD source material and premier pro cs3 as my NLE. Has anyone had any bad experience capturing JVC gy-hd 101 via firewire using matrox rtx2?

Just wrapped a shoot with the hd100. mounted it on a 12footer DIY crane.
This camera needs 20 pounds of counterweight on my set up.

This camera doesnt have auto focus. It has excellent focus assist. You can capture it even with OHCI firefire card and have no problems. I use edius.

How did you control the focus then since its manual? i do wedding videos most of the time and i think its gonna be hard if i have to control the focus all the time while the events is running live. Is it worth it to replace my Z1? can JVC be reliable to most of my projects? One thing that captures my interest in gy-hd 100 is that it can do 24p. Thks for ur help.

Always a good idea to work out your crane shots and focus to suit.... the JVC camera is a nice bit of kit but it does require a bit of planning before shooting. Is it what your looking for? I suppose a lot will depend on how you are used to working.

While I do mostly corporate work and TV commercials with my HD100, I do have a consumer department that does event videography such as weddings. They are equipped with DVX100s. While this camera is amazing with its 24P and has pro features, I wouldnt trickle it down to my event videographers. One reason is its lack of auto focus and optical stabilization which is helpful in run and gun work. I plan to get them sony V1s which has 1080p.

Theres no remote control on the JVC. You can find products that connect to the fujinon lens to control focus etc but these are not supplied with the camera

You can control zoom, focus, and pause / record remotely from a crane using a pair of Fujinon lens controllers... one for zoom and pause / rec, the other for focus. With broadcast video lenses, zoom and focus are almost always two separate controllers. Typically zoom and pause / rec is operated by the right hand and focus by the left hand.

There are a variety of different makes and models for Fujinon lens controllers. JVC and Fuji each offer their own zoom and focus controllers. Then there are third-party companies such as VariZoom Lens Controls whose products are usually a little more affordable.

The 8-pin cable for the zoom and the teleflex drive cable for focus that's included in each controller kit is long enough only for tripod use, but you can easily add cable extensions for working with a crane. Hope this helps,
