Hey everyone... I used to live in seattle a few years ago... and am now back. I picked up filmmaking/videography as a hobby about two years ago or so... I'm interested in getting into the local scene to help on any projects in the area. I have experience with DV - including: premiere, photoshop, after effects, canon cameras (xl-1).... and, I have a lot of my own equipment - including camera and accessories, editing software, sound equipment, etc. I recently shot a music video back where I used to live... for a group I used to be in (www.fadedsoul.com). I'm going to start editing in a few weeks (moving can be a pain). But I'm interested is seeing what sort of projects are out there right now and where I can help out. I work for free... for the love of the media... (though I did do a video documentary for someone and was paid in Beer and Food once). I'm interested in expanding my experience and learn from other seattle filmmakers. Drop me an email at Velasco00@hotmail.com.

CASTING CALL for “Shopping Cart”

I did get a great response and the filming is going great however I am in dire straits as one of the leading charters left for a paying gig which I am happy for her yet it leaves me in a bind. I need an African American Female for the part as all the other parts are taken and the one woman who left leaves me with an all white cast except the leading role of the male actor who is African American.

If you have any info at all I would be grateful if you could forward it to the actress and I would be wiling to give her a logline.
DayDream Believers is going to be filming a short 20min to 25 short in the Uptown area during the month of October and part of November.

There is no payment to the actors or actress who are chosen. DayDream Believers is an non-for profit organization that trains individuals that want to learn filming. We try to make their dreams come true hence the name DayDream Believers. This film is being made for three interns and they are the main crew and they would like it to be sent to five film fests that are up and coming this fall and next spring. No film festivals that are being entered have a prize a cash prize whatsoever.

I guess this is an unusual request, but I need to rent the B&W CRT viewfinder for a project that will be shot over 2-3 weeks in December. I need to rent it from someone located in Canada because if it has to cross the borders, I will need to pay taxes on it.

Here's my story:

I just bought the Canon XL2 with the 20x lens and an additional 14x manual lens. I was originally planing to only buy the body only kit with the manual lens and the viewfinder. But since I'm located in Canada and wanted to buy the camera here (easier for the warranty + I got a great price), there was no way of knowing when the body only package was going to be made available.

Canon Canada and Canon USA are seperate and independant divisions, so even though the body only version is coming out soon in the USA, I got words that it might only come out late November in Canada and that there was a priority list to boot. This was unacceptable for me since I'm starting to shoot late November and wanted a bit of time to get accustomed to the camera.

So I went ahead and bought the XL2 with the 20x lens. I figured this was a positive thing anyway since those 2 lenses combined will fill the totality of my needs. OIS, long telephoto, servo zoom and AF with the 20x, full manual iris control, full manual focus control and a wide angle (with an adapter) with the 14x. They complement each other perfectly.

But now, I don't have enough money left to buy the viewfinder. What's worse, I already bought the 2x magnifier for it. Well OK it's not a huge deal since I know I will eventually buy the FU-1000, it's only a matter of time. But time is what I don't have right now. I will be able to buy the viewfinder in February when I get my tax return, but right now I cannot afford it and I need it badly for my next project. I've been playing with the XL2 a bit and I feel the LCD viewfinder is only so-so. I'm not completely comfortable using it for critical focusing. I also need underscan to avoid bad surprises in post (since transfer to film and DVD authoring are part of the plan).

My only remaining option is therefore to rent it. But it's nowhere to be found here in Montreal. So I was wondering if anyone who owns this viewfinder and will not be needing it in the month of December would be kind enough to rent it to me at a reasonable price. I would pay for shipping (insured and trackable of course).

Let me know if anything can be worked out. Also if anyone knows rental houses in Canada that do "long distance" renting via the mail, I'd be interested to know as well.

Thanks for helping out,

David

Hi directors and producers!

You have a script but no production crew?

I can shoot, light and sound your movie (I got DVXAE, Lowell Lights, Seinh mic plus Boom).

I prefer SHORTS cos I can only shoot on WEEKENDS.
I live in NYC (CHelsea) but can travel if needed.

My crew (can be yours) is me (camera operator, lights) and my assistant (she booms the sound and helps with lights).

If you need she can be a script supervisor too so you can focus on directing. She did great job workinng with me on feature. So 2 people of Prod Crew plus You and talents. Enough to make a low budget movie. I just did one :D

Look through Panasonic's website. They have a program where they give video gear to students to shoot news, docs etc.

I ran into some of these students at a DV Expo last year and I remeber them having an award ceremony for the best student videos in NYC last year.

I believe all you would need is a certified teacher and school affilation to be your sponsor.

Hope this helps

Hi Stephen,
What a great piece of information you provided for me. I currently hold a teachers license, and I dont think it will be too hard to get my daughters school to be my sponser. Many thanks for your tip. I will let you know what kind of results I get.

Thanks again,
Rick

p.s. If anyone wants to donate any old gear please write me, I will pay the shipping costs for all donated gear.

Hey Stephen,
I am a transplanted New Yorker. I moved down to south florida 3 years ago.

I still get calls from NYC from folks looking for video services. That being said, please tell me where you are located, and the type of video work you shoot.

Maybe I can refer some work up there to you. I had a few double booked weddings in NY this past season. I was lucky enough to get coverage for the ones I could not personally shoot.

I still travel back up to NYC to cover most of the calls I get, but if I get a shooter that I can trust, I would probably take less trips up there.

I've got two interviews segments for a DVD project that I've got to shoot asap (in the next week hopefully). I can't make the schedule work and need someone or a couple of shooters to cover these.

One of the personalities is in LA the other in Washington state. The documentary, aside from the archival footage, is all being shot with the XL2 and I want to keeo these sections consistent.

These would be half day shoots tops and a cool project. Anyone in the LA area or Northwest with an XL2? in a pinch I could live with XL1s footage as well.

Jim

Hello,

I will be filming a full length feature in Mexico for three weeks, from February 7-26 using a PAL XL2 and mini35. I am in need of a Director of Photography. Experience with the mini35 is important, but more necessary is a good command of lighting and composition. I will supply the camera and adaptor, and have a Glidecam V-16 and a 3,300 W light package. If you have any equipment besides this to bring to the table (good tripod, flags, silks, c-stands and such), that is a plus.

The film is a pretty big project for its budget, so money is very tight. Monetarily I could offer $1,000 for the 3 weeks (negotiable depending on experience). Mostly I can offer some very exciting filming locations across the Yucatan peninsula (huge abandoned ranch houses which I'm enhancing with false fronts, beautiful Haciendas, a beautiful "Hipico," a place where people train with horses (jumping obstacles, etc) with lush gardens and awesome stables, 18th century stone churches, Colonial cities, etc), some great actors commited to the project, a good script, and an exciting movie to be a part of--one that will hopefully succeed commercially and artistically and become a great resume calling card and a good experience.

The script is in Spanish, dialogue will be in Spanish mostly, with some sections in Belizean English and Mayan. Its target market is the USA though, through international festivals.

The film is a big movie: expansive locations, very dramatic moments for actors, characters seen through many stages of life, some pyrotechnics, some gunplay, some greenscreen, many small parts, different languages... and $23,000 to do it (besides a $14,000 loan for equipment). Its a great story, modesty apart. Its certaily no run-of-the-mill indy film, its a story of high ambitions, epic sentiment.

About myself: I have written and directed 2 short films in 16mm, this is my first feature and my first venture with miniDV. I graduated Cum Laude at the University of Miami in 1997 with a degree in Literature and Film. I have tried to get this film, my dream project, done for 7 years as a 35mm movie, and have recently decided do it in miniDV, putting all my life savings for it.

The crew will be very small but commited, some of them will be communications students (there's no film school in my home state), everybody except for me, the main cast, the DP, Sound Man, the gun property master and maybe a couple more key positions will be people eager but inexperienced.

The film is a fantasy/drama/adventure movie about two reunited twins, a brother and sister, who were very close in childhood but were separated and have led very different lives in different countries, when a catastrophic event brings them together in a very intense and moving adventure.

Please contact me for more details at: florlindafilms@hotmail.com

Thank you very much

Hi folks.

I begin shooting an HD feature tomorrow(we're talking HDCAM here--Sony Cinealta--not HDV) for the next month. It's a fabulous script, hard to describe: part action film, part "Crime and Punishment", part post-modern, part film-noir...in any event, the visuals are going to be very strong. We are framing for 2.40 for eventual film-out to anamorphic 35mm (yes, the financing is in place, as is the distribution deal--this is not a straight-to-video).

In case anyone is interested in coming by to observe or even better, to lend a hand for a day or two, please let me know.

Howdy,

I recently purchased Canon's XL-2 . . . planning on teaching myself the ins and outs of movie-making. And I "might" still have to do that BUT I'd like to link up with a Producer-type person who could help me come up with some budgetary numbers to see what direction I need to go in. This person needs to be completely familiar with ALL areas required from acting contracts to equipment rentals and anything else in between.

I have the first draft of a screenplay ready that could be used to help with the budgeting process. It's a rather complex story-line so someone needs to have a sharp pencil.

That's all I need right now -- someone with the experience necessary to give me some budgetary numbers. I'm 51 and I suddenly realized this "do it yourself" scenario might take more time than I want to wait.

Someone from the Austin, Texas area would be GREAT because I only live about two hours from there. If you're interested, email me some information about yourself.

Thanks,
Gary

Without getting into a political discussion here which I do NOT want to do, nor is it appropriate in this forum, I wish to present an idea for a new film-related project I am working on, in hopes of gathering some interest or help from this good and diverse community.

As you know, if you fit the above demographic, in the current geopolitical climate you or your family or friends might be coming under fire for a variety of reasons - mostly due to racial profiling or a lack of exposure to members of your ethnicity, or due to, of course, the loudest headlines in the media today.

If you fit this demographic and are anything like me, this may be a big influence on you as a filmmaker or a writer or an artist of whatever type. You seek to make your voice known, and probably ache to find others like yourself who can help you do so. But it's hard to feel legitimate and accepted when even something as simple as filling out your ethnicity in a form or application for something requires you to call yourself an "Other". It's a tiny but telling indicator as to the current state of acceptance and diversity in most of the modern world.

So what is this project? Perhaps to start, a mini-online film fest with targeted subjects, with various prizes to try to get like-minded folks to crawl out of the woodwork and get motivated (I can always find sponsors). It could be a lot of things, but it will definitely be a gathering place for a loose network of filmmakers, writers and other artists who wish to collaborate, and to make their voices known.

You know, the voices from the "other" box.
http://www.theotherbox.com

I'm looking for random ideas and/or interested parties who want to help, or just want to put in their 2 cents as to what would be intriguing to them; what would get their attention and have them participate. If you don't wish to post here, do please email me: imran (at) theotherbox.com.

And thank you in advance for not making this a political discussion.

Hi all

I need a pan shot over london at night, with some landmark that let's people know it's London.

I need it on DV tape. A couple of minutes is all I need where I can select the most appropiate shot.

I will pay for postage and tape costs. I don't want anybody to go out and do this specially because I can't pay you.

Let me know what camera you are using and if you can get a nice clean shot (without turning up the camera gain too much)

I will pay you for your cost via paypal.

Many thanks to whoever can do this...
Donie

ps: I can't afford to travel to London myself just to get this shot.

Cool David. Mark mentioned you yesterday. The feature is going well, the HD setup is inensive (my DIT is troubleshooting all day long, it seems) but the pictures are pretty nonetheless.

How did your show go?

David Mesloh
November 17th, 2004, 01:29 PM
Show went well. I'll tell you more another time. BTW, how is Mark doing? I gave him his first job many moons ago.

He can be a little dramatic sometimes but he's pretty good for a young pup.

Yea... HD seams to have it's own set of problems. We shot on the Varicam.
I had to rig a power adapter so we could power the AJA HD to SD converter box. Seems the Stedicam operator's monitor was SD only. The cord to power the AJA was AC only. Grrrrrrrr. I ended up taking one of the battery boxes I showed you, gaffer taped a 400w inverter to it, then ran 20 ft of SO cord so the battery guy ran along side the Stedicam Operator so we could power the converter. Oh, and BTW, it was 15 miles north of Zumz Beach when they found out they didn't have the right cable. Glad I can think on my feet.

That was just one of a myriad of little "fixes" I had to pull off. Try making gate hinges from a pair of Cardelleni's and a couple of c-stand heads at 3 in the morning. Fun............... the smoke and the flame bars were perfect though.

Have fun.

David
