Has anyone fitted the EX with a matte box yet?
I added a 77mm clear digital protection filter, then 77mm to 82mm step-up ring and the Matteblox HD and large flag fits nicely. Nice monitor hoodie too.

Here is a Chrosziel 4x4 matte box on rods. If only the LCD would close.

Anymore EX1 matte box solutions that are inexpensive, but also complete with bae, rails, and flags?
I don't want any additional weight on the lens.

I talked to Brian Valente of Redrock last Wednesday at DVexpo and specifically requested from him that the new matt box will allow the use of graduated neutral density filters. I told Brian that I need to be able to raise the filters vertically and also rotate them at the same time and that this system will work on the new EX 1. Brian assured me that his matt box will do this

Inexpensive and quality are two word rarely found in combination to describe a matte box/ rails/ baseplate system. However, Red Rock is getting ready to ship theirs in the coming months. You may want to look at that.

Full system. I have their follow focus, base plate and 2 sets of their rails. Excellent quality all around. I expect the upcoming matte box to be equally sound.

Do you have an idea what entire rig - base, rails, matte box and flags will cost?

The word is the box is about 500. not sure on the side flags. the base plate is about 250, 75 - 100 per set of rails depending on length. Probably in the 1K neighborhood all in. You can go to their store online and check all of it out except for the actual matte box and wings.

I think there has been some kind of misunderstanding between you. Brian is enthusiast on the EX1, but from pictures and measures IT LOOKS (at least to me) like Redrock mattebox can't be a perfect (so..raise/rotate grads) fit for the EX1. For sure ok with an EX1+35 adapter, but that's a different story!

I am not sure whether I am seeing it right but did you turn the trays upside down? Someone somewhere suggested that if the trays are accessible from the bottom, the matte box fits with the LCD and all. It would be a pain in the neck when used with rods because it would essentially mean removing the matte just to replace a filter but at least the LCD should close properly.

If only someone could hammer it into the SONY designers' heads that these cameras will be used with matte boxes and most likely with better external microphones so that they stop putting in the built-in mikes and make some room for the matte boxes. How bloody difficult is this?

I did turn the trays upside down. And with the mount for the matte box at the end of the rods they go in and out easily. I just need to figure out that LCD thing.

The Cavison Matte Box is worth a try as well. It looks like a tight fit but it clears with the LCD closed.

You can get just a matte box < get the HD version for 16x9 > and it comes with a flag or add a large flag if you want. The box can use 4x4 filters but there is no way to rotate filters < unless you remove flag and rotate the whole box >
This low cost solution folds up flat and is simple to pack in a small camera bag.

Just got my EX1 and the Chrosziel made for the Z1 fits fine (can park the LCD). There is no problem inserting filter trays from the bottom -- been doing that for some time. Agree that it would be better without that mic in that position, but that's how it is!

So is the problem that the mic interferes?

No, that mic is built in. Not interfere so much as just in the way. However with the Z1/FX there is the same problem and I don't find bottom access to the filter trays to be troublesome. Of course you must have the rails right back.
