I captured a few tapes for my friend and he wants to edit on premiere 2.0. The footage came from my Canon XHA1 and is HDV at 1080 24f. Any suggestions? He's having problems finding a suitable mov-->avi converter.

Also as of right now, the only thing he gets is a black screen with audio playback.

This is probably overly expensive for what he wants to do, but Cineform is wonderful for cross-platform compatibility, and might be worth investigating!

From what I've read the FCP codecs are unique to Macs and are not cross-platform compatible. We edited a film on FCP and went to do some work in Premiere CS3 and found the captured footage was useless. We ended up converting to H.264 in FCP before we could use in Premiere (and so far the results have not been that spectacular).
Best to capture on a PC in Premiere or HDVsplit, then it will be cross-platform compatible.
